NATURAL DISASTER

NAME[ALVIA FATIMA]
CLASS[6TH]
CAUSES OF NATURAL DISASTER
The main causes of natural disasters are tectonic shifts, lunar activities,
deforestation, soil erosion, air pressure, ocean currents, pollution, global
warming, mining, seismic waves, etc. Agricultural practices, mining,
deforestation, etc., can lead to landslides. Plants and animals can also be
damaged by wildfires.
A natural disaster is described as "a big event caused by Earth's natural
processes that causes widespread destruction of the environment and loss of
lives."A natural hazard often precedes a natural disaster. The Gujarat
Earthquake, which happened on January 26, 2001, is an example of a natural
disaster. The natural hazard is found beneath the state of Gujarat's active fault
lines.
Different disasters occur due to various causes. Causes for such calamities
can be contributed to deforestation, soil erosion, and pollution. The major
causes of catastrophic disasters are natural phenomena occurring in the
earth's crust as well as on the surface.
EARTHQUAKE
An earthquake is the shifting of the Earth’s plates,
which results in a sudden shaking of the ground
that can last for a few seconds to a few minutes.
Within seconds, mild initial shaking can strengthen
and become violent. Earthquakes happen without
warning and can happen at any time of year.
Certain states are more prone to higher frequency
of earthquakes, particularly California, Hawaii,
Nevada, and Washington.
Earthquakes are quite common and occur
somewhere around the world every day. However,
the vast majority are considered minor. The U.S.
Geological Survey in 2015 reported more than 3,000
earthquakes in the United States.
DROUGHT
Drought is a prolonged dry period in the natural climate cycle that can
occur anywhere in the world. It is a slow-onset disaster characterized by
the lack of precipitation, resulting in a water shortage. Drought can have
a serious impact on health, agriculture, economies, energy and the
environment.
Lack of rainfall for an extended period of time can bring farmers
and metropolitan areas to their knees. It does not take very long; in
some locations of the country, a few rain-free weeks can spread
panic and affect crops. Before long, we are told to stop washing
our cars, cease watering the grass, and take other water
conservation steps. In this situation, sunny weather is not always
the best weather.
TSUNAMI
Tsunamis are giant waves caused by earthquakes or volcanic
eruptions under the sea. Out in the depths of the ocean,
tsunami waves do not dramatically increase in height. But as
the waves travel inland, they build up to higher and higher
heights as the depth of the ocean decreases. The speed of
tsunami waves depends on ocean depth rather than the
distance from the source of the wave. Tsunami waves may
travel as fast as jet planes over deep waters, only slowing
down when reaching shallow waters. While tsunamis are often
referred to as tidal waves, this name is discouraged by
oceanographers because tides have little to do with these
giant waves
VOLCANO
The Earth's crust has 17 major, rigid tectonic plates. These float
on a hotter, softer layer in its mantle.[2] Volcanoes are often found
where tectonic plates are coming together.
Volcanoes can also form where there is stretching and thinning
of the crust's plates, e.g., in the East African Rift.[3] Volcanoes are
usually not found where two tectonic plates slide past one
another.
Volcanism away from plate boundaries is caused by
mantle plumes. These so-called "hotspots", for example Hawaii,
are thought to arise from upwelling magma from the
core–mantle boundary, 3,000 km deep in the Earth.
TORNADO
Tornado - A violently rotating column of air touching the ground,
usually attached to the base of a thunderstorm.
Tornadoes are nature"s most violent storms. Spawned from
powerful thunderstorms, tornadoes can cause fatalities and
devastate a neighborhood in seconds. Winds of a tornado may
reach 300 miles per hour. Damage paths can be in excess of
one mile wide and 50 miles long. Strong downburst (straight-
line) winds may also occur due to the same thunderstom. Hail is
very commonly found very close to the tornadoes, as the
strongest thunderstorms that spawn tornadoes are formed
under the atmospheric conditions that are also highly likely to
make hail. Every state is at some risk from this hazard.
STORM
Many of the times you read in the newspaper or watch the
news on television talking about the storms, reporters and
the government ask the public to stay home for safety
purposes. Ever thought about why they asked us to stay
inside? Don’t worry if you are not aware of the answers.
Vedantu has brought detailed notes on the storms to help
students understand the topic in detail. A storm is a
disturbance caused in the atmosphere when the ocean
develops a low-pressure zone. It brings heavy rain and
destruction to the coastal areas. But, for the drought-
affected areas, it is a blessing in disguise
BLIZZARD
A blizzard is a severe snowstorm characterised by low visibility
and strong sustained winds lasting for a very long period of time
usually around three or four hours. A weather condition where
there is no snow but loose snow on the ground is lifted and
blown by strong winds is known as a ground blizzard.

Blizzard is one of the atmospheric natural disasters faced by

many people in different parts of the world. Out of the many
natural disasters that take place on earth, a blizzard is one of
the natural disasters which usually take place in the winter
season. This article will shed more light on blizzards.
