INTRODUCTION

Airbags are inflatable cushions built into a vehicle that protect

occupants from hitting the vehicle interior or objects outside the
vehicle (for example, other vehicles or trees) during a collision. The
instant a crash begins, sensors start to measure impact severity.
WHY WE NEED BIKE AIRBAG SYSTEM
 Ministry of Road Transport and Highways releases Annual Report on ‘Road
Accidents in India-2022”
“As per the report, a total of 4,61,312 road accidents have been reported by States and
Union Territories (UTs) during the calendar year 2022, which claimed 1,68,491 lives
and caused injuries to 4,43,366 persons. This marks an increase of 11.9% in accidents,
9.4% in fatalities, and 15.3% in injuries compared to the previous year.”
 Majorly Car crashes and motorcycle accidents differ significantly. In cars,
occupants usually impact against predictable surfaces (steering wheels, dashboards,
etc.). But in motorcycle crashes, riders can be thrown in unpredictable directions.
FIRST AIRBAG SYSTEM IN BIKE

 The most complex of these is the airbag,

which has been used in MotoGP for years
but finally became mandatory in 2018. It
is positioned around the back, shoulders
and rib cage inside the suit, and is
designed to absorb the forces endured by
riders when they fall off their bikes.
 In 2005 Honda Motors co. ltd. Introduce
the air bag in bike.
 In the model Honda Gold Wing, they
introduce and execute air bag system.
FAILURE OFST 1 AIRBAG SYSTEM IN
BIKE
1. Slower reaction time and inflation time. Even the fastest mechanical system is
twice as slow compared to the slowest electronic system.
2. Deployment depends on the length of the tether. The more the length, the more
freedom of movement but also slower deployment.
3. May not get deployed in certain types of crashes where there is not enough
separation of the rider and the bike. For eg: low side crash.
4. Accidental deployments, though rare, can still occur. Require about 30Kg of pull
on the tether to cause deployment.
5. Have to remember to attach the tether every time.
WHAT’S NEW
 The designs feature an airbag that wraps around the rider and then detaches
from the vehicle.
 The airbag wraps then cover whole body of a rider.
 This system measures the seating position and weight of every passenger in the
motorcycle .
 It can also tell whether your seatbelt is done up or not.
 The product is designed to make riding a motorcycle as safe as riding a car
OUR AIRBAG SYSTEM
WORKING OF AIRBAG SYSTEM
 If any accident occur then the sensor senses and transmit the signal to the AND
gate.
 AND gate send the signal to the airbag ECU.
 ECU send electrical signal to an ignitor.
 The heat generated causes sodium azide to decompose into sodium metal and
nitrogen gas, which inflates in airbags.
 Airbag covers the whole body and protect the rider and reduce the impact.
MAJOR SENSOR & ITS LOCATION
 CRASH SENSOR :- Crash sensors need to detect a collision and convert it to usable signals within
milliseconds. The accelerating forces acting on the sensors after a collision can be as high as 100g (100 times the
earth's gravitational force)
 SEAT OCCUPY SENSOR :- A seat sensor is a device that detects the presence and weight of occupants
sitting in a vehicle's seats.
 BRAKE PRESSURE SENSOR :- A brake pressure sensor records the magnitude and speed of the brake pressure
change and the sensor communicates these values to the DBC control unit. The control unit compares the values to its stored
DBC activation thresholds. DBC will activate only if certain predefined criteria are met ..
