WHAT IS 3D PRINTING?

• Additive manufacturing (AM) or 3D printing is a digital manufacturing process and offers

virtually limitless opportunities to develop structures/objects by tailoring material
composition.
• Processing conditions, and geometry technically at every point in an object.
• In this review we present two different early adopted, however, widely used, polymer-based
3D printing processes; fused deposition modelling (FDM), selective laser sintering (SLS) of
polymers

TYPES OF 3D
PRINTING
WHY 3D PRINTING?

• Rapid prototyping of components

• Positive cash flow
• Democratize the production of goods
• Labour cost is saved
• Any prototype is build in limited time
POLYMERS
• Polymers are substances composed of macromolecules, very large molecules with molecular
weights ranging from few thousand to as high as millions of grams/mole.
• Examples
POLYLACTIC ACID
• Poly lactic acid is also known as poly or polylactide is a thermoplastic polymer.[-CHCO-] n
• Melting point 150 to 160 degrees
• It can be prepared by ring- opening polymerization of lactide
• It can be fabricated by 3d printing , casting, injection moulding, extrusion, machining and
solvent welding.

EFFECT OF PRINTING OF
POLYMERS AT DIFFERENT ANGLES
• In sub-build orientation, 45 degrees orientations have slightly better properties than the 0 degrees and 90
degress sub-build orientations in both cases.

• Build orientation has much less impact on tensile strength when compared to layer thickness

• Tensile strength increases when the layer thickness increases while the flexuralstrength decreases.

• The increase in tensile strength as layer thickness increases is due to better connection by polymerization
of the new layer with the prior layer.
SOFTWARE REQUIRE FOR
3D PRINTING
• Ultimaker qura
• Solidworks or any CAD software
• Formlabs software
• Save the file in .stl format
DISADVANTAGES OF 3D PRINTING

• 3D printing is less effective for large building components as it is still time taking process.
• 3D printing still doesn’t give certain explanation about flexural properties and remaining
other properties
• Restricted build size of the machine
• Post Processing, large volumes printing takes very much time to print
• Reduction in manufacture jobs
