Operationalizing
• Operationalizing ‘ abstract’ may be difficult but media studies by
and large deal with operationalizing difficult concepts.

• Look at the literature online ; you will find one if you are lucky !

• If not, try and become more lucky! Develop your OWN operational
definition.

• Think of what means to others by comfortable viewing environment.

Think of what it means to you.
Still Thinking…
• Look at ‘ its’ popular meanings. Browse through dictionary and
thesaurus.

• Its ‘OKAY’ even if meanings are ‘silly’, ‘funny’ and ‘wordy’.

• It may sound so initially but while doing factor analysis or other

statistical analysis you may find out how inter-looped meanings are
in real sense.
Remember
• Operational and conceptual meanings together will bring out better
operational definition of ‘ abstract’.

• Only operationalizing it without a conceptual meaning AND vice

versa will make your study
WEAK in all respects.

H1: Air- conditioning in summer leads to comfortable viewing
environment.

Here,
DV= Comfortable viewing environment
IV= Air conditioning

How to measure DV?

How to measure DV?
• Lowering of temperature between 20- 25 0 C may lead to relaxation
of people

• Lowering of temperature between 20- 250C may lead to no

perspiration/ sweating

• Lowering of temperature 20 – 250 C may lead to greater

pleasure .
How to measure DV?
• Respondents (30) in number are required to answer these
questions with dichotomous questions. (Yes or No)

• If we find more than 15 people responding YES, we

will consider a comfortable viewing nvironment defined as the one
that has these 3 features.

H2: Comfortable viewing environment during news watching leads to
greater retention among elderly people. ( 65 years and above)

We assume here that adults don’t suffer of any pre- existing conditions
of health.

Here, IV= Comfortable viewing environment

How to measure DV?

How to measure DV?
• No outdoor noise during watching
• Optimum temperature (20-250C) during
• Relaxed seating posture

• On a scale of 1 to 10, respondents ( 30 in number ) were asked to

rate each of these items and the mean score was considered . We
assume that if the score is more than 5, then it is regarded as a
comfortable environment.
“Comfort Index”
• Here, we have framed our own unit of scale. We can name it as
“Comfort Index”

• We consider that a score of more than 6, on an average, speaks

that it is a comfortable viewing environment

• Say, we had included, an addition to the list to be 4. Green pine

trees in the surrounding vicinity within 10 yards. If people have
rated it low, or zero, we can consider to throw it out of the inputs
that construct Comfortable viewing Index
