    Key Terms Meaning Map of Central Europe 1939 Key People


    Treaty of Peace deal that officially ended WW1. The German people hated it Neville Chamberlain – British Prime
    Versailles as Germany was forced to accept blame for the war and pay Minister 1937-1940.
    reparations.

    Reparations Germany had to pay £6.6 billion to the allies Benito Mussolini – Extreme RW, became
    the Fascist Dictator of Italy until 1943.

    Democracy A system of government where the population makes decisions by Joseph Stalin - Extreme LW Communist
    voting. Dictator until death in 1953.
    Dictatorship A system where one person rules with absolute authority. Adolf Hitler – Extreme RW Fascist
    Dictator of Germany 1933-1945
    Fascism Belief that:
    • People should not have equal rights or protections because
    some are ‘superior’ to others.
    • Some groups are prevented from becoming equal to others by
    discrimination (eg based on race, religion etc).
    • Aim to spread extreme nationalistic pride (love of country)

    Communism Belief that:


    • All should be equal
    • Should be no difference between rich and poor
    • Should be no private ownership of land or businesses,
    instead should be owned by everyone and people should work
    together

    Capitalism A way of running the economy where a person uses money to start
    a business. If it does well, they can keep the profits and grow rich.
    Appeasement Giving in to someone's demands because they seem reasonable

    The Policy of Neville Chamberlain's government followed this policy; by giving in


    Appeasement to Hitler's demands, he hoped to avoid another war.
