Our first thought is our body made of different organs such as heart, lungs, stomach, liver
etc.

But in the basic level our body is made up of atoms.

A human body is composed of various elements, 96% comprised of elements are oxygen,
carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen. These are essential for structure and function of the body.

In addition , the other important elements such as calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sulphur,
sodium, chlorine, and magnesium are also present and play important roles in our body.

The other elements are trace elements.

Overall, the human body is a complex system made up of a wide variety of elements that
work together to sustain life.
Oxygen 65%

Carbon 18%

Hydrogen 10%

Nitrogen 3%

Other elements 4%
FUNCTIONS OF ELEMENTS IN OUR HUMAN BODY

• Oxygen: It is a important component of the respiratory system. Oxygen together with hydrogen form
water, which is the primary solvent found in the body. The liver, brain, and heart consume the most
oxygen in the body.

• Carbon : Carbon is the building block, required to form carbohydrates, fats, proteins. It makes up 18%
of the human body. Glucose in the body hold carbon. When oxygen is used in the body, It is mixed
with carbon creating carbon-dioxide. Breaking bond of carbon is an energy source.

• Hydrogen : it is important component of water (H2O). It keeps you hydrated and help in removing
toxins from the body. With the help of hydrogen, joints in our body remains lubricated. It make our
immune system strong. The energy giving food like carbohydrates which is made up of carbon,
hydrogen and oxygen.

• Nitrogen : Nitrogen is required to make amino acids, which are the building blocks of proteins.
proteins which are essential for growth, repair body tissue, and other body functions.
• Calcium :Almost all calcium in the body is stored in bones and teeth, giving them structure and
healthy. It helps for muscles to move. Also Keeping a normal heartbeat.

• Phosphorus : It work with calcium to build strong bones. We need right amount of calcium and
phosphorus for bone health. It can prevent you from getting illness and diseases.

• Potassium : It helps to nerves, muscles and heart to function well. It is used for preventing high
blood pressure and preventing stroke.

• Chlorine : It is used to maintain fluid balance in our body. It is a component of hydrochloric acid,
which is produced in the stomach to help digestion.

• Sodium : It maintain the water balance in our body and helps to nerve function.

• Magnesium: It is used in energy production and to build the structure of muscle and bones.

• Sulphur : It bond with the proteins need to perform their functions.

• Iron : It is an essential in the body. It is Needed for growth. To make haemoglobin. It support
immune system, healthy skin, hair, and nails.

Haemoglobin – A protein in red blood cells

The other elements are usually small quantities in our body.

Zinc ,copper, iodine, fluorine and etc.

Zinc is first responder against infection. Copper is used in forming red blood cells.
