L
Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams of the simply supported beam with a uniformly distributed load.
SOLUTION TO EXAMPLE 2
• The beam as well as the load is symmetrical. To find the reactions,
find the equivalent load on the beam given by wL. This load will be
shared equally between the supports so
= =
• Calculation of shear forces
• The beam has just one section in the interval 0 x L from the LHS
• The origin, 0 coincides with point A
EXAMPLE 2 (CONT)
At a distance x from the origin, the shear force is given by
= - wx (remember the sign convention)
At x = 0,
=0
=
At x = L,
= - wL = -
EXAMPLE 2 (CONT)
At x =
= -w=0
• NOTE
At concentrated (point) loads, there are two values of the shear force,
one immediately to the left of the load, the other immediately to the
right when working from left to right along the beam.

EXAMPLE 3
W
A B
Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams of the cantilever with a point load at the free
end.
SOLUTION TO EXAMPLE 3
• Cantilevers are solved by calculating the shear forces and bending
moments without first determining the reactions as they appear as
the shear force and bending moment in the fixed end
• Calculation of shear forces:
• Start from the free end as the origin and work from right to left along
the beam
• The beam has one section within the interval 0x

EXAMPLE 4

Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams of the cantilever with a uniformly distributed
load
SOLUTION TO EXAMPLE 4

the origin
• At distance x from the origin,
= wx
At x = 0,
