The Chapel

A brief for the group project


Introduction
Blood Rites (a cult-based horror game set in
1932 inspired by the popular horror games
amnesia and Outlast 2) will explore the horrors
that lie within the cults of Satan and for those
who have been dragged into the world.​

Set in the rural areas of America in 1932 our


protagonist Eilleen will be forced to confront
her past and the horrors she was subject to
when she was younger. She will experience the
themes of fear, horror, claustrophobia and
shock as she returns to a place trapped in the
past.

Protagonist Backstory
Eileen was born into the cult and was manipulated her whole life to
follow the beliefs of their leader. Being a child, she didn’t know any
better and went along with what she was told as the fear of being
banished to hell would terrify her almost every night. It was just her
and her mother since her father mysteriously died when she was an
infant. As she grows up and matures, she starts to develop her own
ideologies and realizes that the “family” she was in was but a
mindless cult full of sheep following a crazy man with his extremist
ideologies.
Once she reached her 18th birthday, she had what she thought to be
more freedom in her life, however this was not true. One night, she
made her escape through the thick forest making the tough decision
of leaving her mother behind as she was too deep into that world.
Upon her escape, she realized there was a whole world out there
which was entirely different to the one she grew up in. To her the
normal world felt alien but exciting. She loved the freedom she had
compared to the prison like world she was used to. Eileen set up her
own life for two years before her past eventually caught back up to
her.

Name: Eileen
Age: 20
Height: 5’9”
Outfit Design: 1930’s dress with a sleek skirt going
down to her ankles. Rope to tie her waist.
Hair: Tied pigtail/bunny tail, brown with some ribbons
for aesthetics.

The Cult
This cult is unknown to the public as it’s located in its
own makeshift town in rural America surrounded by
forest making it near impossible to find for outsiders.
Led by a deranged priest who manipulates the minds
of those under his wing. He has convinced his cultists
that they must follow this path of purity and the world
has become flooded with sinners and they all must be
cleansed.
With a cleansing they can start the world fresh “A
New World” in which they can do what they believe is
right. To achieve his goal, sacrifices need to be made
from the sinners of the current world. These sacrifices
bring about a malevolent demon to purge the world
of sin and show them the horrors they will face in hell.
At least that’s what his followers believe.
The Demon
The Demon, descended from Baphomet, is destined to purify the world with fire. Its arms bear crosses that, when
ignited, serve as deadly weapons. Standing at 8'8", it towers menacingly over all, its silhouette a harbinger of fiery doom.
Its lineage to Baphomet imbues it with ancient malice, and with every swing of its blazing arms, it aims to fulfil its sinister
purpose of a fiery cleanse, embodying a fearsome blend of ancient evil and destructive intent. The Demon's towering
presence symbolizes an overarching threat of infernal purgation, a dark doom heralded by its ominous ancestry.
The Finder – Eye Demon
The Finder is a menacing guardian of dark rituals, loyal only to the summoner who calls it
forth. Shaped like an eerie eyeball with attached eyelids, it possesses an all-seeing vision,
making it a vigilant protector of sinister sites. However, its inability to hear contrasts sharply
with its visual abilities. This Demon scans meticulously for intruders, looking for pure-
blooded souls. The Finder's presence is a grim testament to the sinister, unseen terrors
lurking within the unknown, ready to defend the dark ceremonies it oversees.

Art Style
The theme and time-period of the game which best suits, it an American gothic. The American gothic style will
help to build the atmosphere of horror and the paranormal. As the cult village being set in 1932, the style of
buildings will be wood paneled and very dated décor to indicate time has frozen and is stuck. Painting the
scenery with lots of old aged tools and few detailed machinery fitting. With the style being inspired from games
such as Outlast 2, Amnesia and some of the Resident Evil games, the style will be dark and gloomy as to fit the
horror theme.
The Chapel
Following the old Amish Community Chapel design, this concept
includes the iconic tower at the front, with stained glass windows
for light to shine through. This design features 8 stained glass
windows, 4 each side, that have different unique paintings.
The vestry, where the insane priest works, has an included trapdoor
leading to the crypt. The key to which, is some hidden within.
The Graveyard
The Graveyard is a significant part of this game. Gravestones will be everywhere, with some having names
attached to them. Varying sized tombstones, with some being shaped differently.
Strategically placed tree’s cast shadows in certain areas, giving the place a more eerie vibe. Shadow figures can
sometimes be spotted peaking from behind some of them.
The Maze
The Graveyard is a significant part of this game. Gravestones will be everywhere, with some having names
attached to them. Varying sized tombstones, with some being shaped differently.

Story
In a dark and eerie narrative, Eileen finds
herself waking up in a cellar with no memory
of how she got there.
As she navigates her way out, she stumbles
upon a dead guard and a note that hints at a
grim reality of people being held against their
will for some ominous purpose.
Upon unlocking a trapdoor, she finds herself
in a priests' vestry within a chapel, where she
discovers notes and books detailing sacrifices
and potential victims, including a case file on
herself.
As she moves through the vestry and into the
main area of the chapel, the unsettling scenes
of a goat skull on the altar and a decaying
human body replacing the figure of Jesus on
the cross send shivers down her spine.
Story
As the eerie atmosphere intensifies, Eileen discovers
a flickering light in a confession booth, and upon
entering, a voice she recognizes as her mother's
unveils more about a dark plan through a note.
The ghostly voice directs her to the center of a maze
to uncover more. However, upon reaching the
entrance, she finds it locked but discovers a key.
As she makes her way through a fog-filled
graveyard, she follows a mysterious cat, encounters
a statue pointing to a key on a gravestone, and
finally approaches the dreaded maze amidst a
general horror ambiance.
Story

Within the menacing maze, Eileen's journey reaches


a climactic confrontation at its center where a
sinister ritual is taking place.

Cult members surround a burning crucifix,


summoning a demon in a frightening ceremony.

As the cult members vanish, Eileen is left with a


choice to flee or confront the demon. Choosing to
fight, she valiantly uses a lantern to fend off the
demon, dispelling the evil back to where it came
from.

This harrowing ordeal leaves a lasting imprint, with


each dark corner holding secrets yet to be uncovered
in the unfolding narrative.

Gameplay
The mechanics will involve basic exploration of the supernatural
area our player will find themselves in. With multiple pickups to
further the story, they will navigate through the level
understanding what monstrosities have occurred at this hidden
hellhole.

A mechanic included will be a lantern used for the players light


source but what the player will discover is that this light will
help them later in the game when faced with enemies as it will
destroy those exposed to its direct source.

To build the atmosphere random events will be triggered to


create a tense, disturbing atmosphere with random jump scares
to keep the player on edge throughout the playthrough.

Notes, pictures and items can be found around the map


detailing the story and giving life to the scene.
