BIOMIMETIC

(from Biology to Technology)

Biologi (2 sks)
Definition
'Biomimicry' is a scientific field that aims to reproduce and learn from
the most effective natural processes.

'bios' which means life

'mimesis' which means to imitate
At the intersection of biology and technology, this field
involves studying nature's best ideas and then imitating these
designs and processes to solve human problems.

For example, New Iridium is working toward developing a platform that

mimics photosynthesis by using light energy to convert water and CO2
into chemical energy.
Three Component of Biomimecry
1. Imitate : research-based practice of learning from and then replicating
nature’s forms, processes, and ecosystems to create more regenerative
designs.

2. Ethos : The philosophy of understanding how life works and creating

designs that continuously support and create conditions conducive to life.

3. Re(Connect): observe and spend time in nature to understand how life

works so that we may have a better ethos to emulate biological strategies
in our designs.
Why learn from nature?
By infusing biological strategies in design, we can transform sustainable
innovation.
biomimicry is a type of bioinspired design,
not all bioinspired design is biomimicry.
Biomimetic Innovations Inspired by Nature

The design of the helicopter was inspired by the flight mechanism of the dragonfly, one
of the first insects to evolve the ability to fly. The dragonfly can hover in place, fly
backward, and quickly change direction, all abilities that engineers have tried to
replicate in helicopters.
Self-Cleaning Surfaces and Lotus Leaves: The self-cleaning properties
of lotus leaves have inspired a whole range of products. The microscopic
structure of a lotus leaf repels water and dirt particles, a phenomenon
known as the 'Lotus Effect.' Today, we have self-cleaning paints and
fabrics based on this principle.
Velcro and Burdock Burrs: inspired by the way burrs cling to fur and
clothing.
