PELTON TURBINE

INTRODUCTION
Pelton wheel/ turbine is a tangential turbine and the
available energy at the entrance is completely kinetic
energy.

It is preferable at high head and low discharge with

low specific speed.

The pressure available at inlet and outlet is

atmospheric
AIM
To conduct the performance test on the given Pelton
turbine and plot the characteristic curves.
APPARATUS
Pelton turbine
Supply pump unit
Pressure gauges
Hook gauge
V-notch
Stop watch
Spring balanace
Weights
FORMULA
Torque : T = (W-S) * g * R in N-m

W – load on break drum

S – Load on spring balance
R – Radius of break drum in m
g – Acceleration due to gravity

Qact H5/2 tan(Ө/2) Cd

H- Head over V notch
g – Acceleration due to gravity
 Cd – Coefficient of discharge =
0.6
Output power = 2*π*N*T in watt
60

N – Speed of turbine in rpm

T - Torque

I/P =ƍ*g*Qact*HT

ƍ – Density of water
 Qact – Actual discharge
 HT = Hp + Z
 Hp – Pressure head
 Z – Elevation head
UNIT SPEED, Nu

UNIT POWER, Pu =

UNIT DISCHARGE, Qu

 EFFICIENCY ,η *100
