The experiment aims to perform a load test on an impulse water turbine (Pelton turbine) by varying the loads and measuring the corresponding output power, efficiency and other parameters.

The experiment aims to perform a load test on an impulse water turbine (Pelton turbine).

The steps involve measuring the turbine speed, calculating the minimum load, adding loads incrementally, measuring pressure, flow rate, weights and calculating output power, input power and efficiency.

LOAD TEST ON IMPULSE WATER TURBINE

AIM:

To perform the load test on impulse water turbine (Pelton turbine).

APPARATUS REQUIRED:

 Pressure gauge
 Venurimeter
 Break drum diameter
 Tachometer

FORMULA:

Input power=WQH/1000 kW

Where,

Q-Discharge (m 3/s)

H-Head of water (m)

W-Weight Density=9810 N/m 3

H=Pressure / (density*gravity constant) in m

Discharge (Q)=Cd*A*B*B* (2*9.81*dH)/(1-B^4)

Where,

A=3.14*r^2 in m2

=3.318^-3 m3

dH=(P1-P2)*10 m of water

= (4.7-3.8)*10

=9 m of water

Experiment No. 4 - LOAD TEST ON IMPULSE WATER TURBINE

PROCEDURE:

 Initially the brake drum circumference and the rope circumference is measured
using the given thread.
 The effective radius is calculated using the rope and brake drum circumference.
 The speed of the turbine is measured using the tachometer and is set to be
maintained at constant speed of all loads.
 The minimum load of the Pelton turbine is calculated using the maximum output.
 Using this, the loads are added in the hanger in successive steps until the
maximum load is reached.
 For the corresponding loads the inlet pressure is measured using the pressure
gauge and the total head of water is calculated.
 Venturimeter pressure gauge readings are measured as P1 and P2 for the
corresponding loads.
 The flow rate of water is calculated from the Venurimeter readings.
 The net weight is calculated using the weight on hanger, weight on spring balance
and self-weight.
 Output power is calculated.
 Input power is calculated from discharge of the Venurimeter and th head of water.
 Finally the efficiency of the turbine is calculated.
