KAPLAN TURBINE
AIM:-
To study the performance characteristics of Kaplan turbine under constant head and constant speed
conditions
APPARATUS REQUIRED:-
Kaplan turbine, Pump set, Venturimeter fitted with pressure gauge, Tachometer, Weight,
Hanger, spring balance and pressure gauge.
PROCEDURE:
1. Note the system details,
(a) Diameter of the break drum (D) in m
(b) Diameter of rope (d) in m
2. Loosen the break wheel so that the needle in the spring balance read zero.
3. Keep the delivery gate valve opening at about 3/8 th open position.
4. Close the delivery gate valve completely and start the pump.
5. After the motor is running of normal speed, open the delivery gate valve and adjust the inlet
pressure in the pressure gauge.
6. Note the venture meter pressure gauge readings
7. Note the speed of the turbine.
8. Load the turbine by adding weight to the break drum.
9. Repeat the experiment for different loadings
FORMULAE:
1. Delivery head (Hd) = (Pd x 104 x 9.81) / 9810 m
where Pd = delivery pressure in kg/cm2
2. Exit Head (He) = (13.6 x Pe /1000) m where Pe = exit pressure in mm of Hg
3. Total head (H) = delivery head + exit head = Hd + He m
4. Discharge Qa = Cd x {(a1 x a2) √ (2gh)} / {√ (a12 – a22)} m3/s
Cd = Coefficient of discharge for venturimeter = 0.95
a1 – area of inlet pipe = (π/4 x d12) m2, where d1 = inlet pipe diameter = 100 mm
a2 – area of venturi throat = (π/4 x d22) m2, where d2 = venturi throat diameter = 60 mm
h = manometer water head = (P1-P2) x 104 x 9.81 / 9810 m of water column where P1, P2
are venturimeter readings in kg/cm2
5. Input power =(9810 x H in meters x Q in m3/s)/1000 kW where H = total head
6. Output power = 2πNT / (60 x 1000) kW
N= Turbine speed in rpm
T = Torque in N-m = 9.81 x Effective radius of the break drum in meters x brake load in kg
Effective radius of the break drum = brake drum radius + rope diameter in meters
5. Efficiency η = Output power / Input power x 100
