Gas Law Presentation

The gas laws are a group of laws that govern the
behaviour of gases by providing relationships
between the following:

•The volume occupied by the gas.

•The pressure exerted by a gas on the walls of
its container
•The absolute temperature of the gas.
•The amount of gaseous substance (or) the
number of moles of gas.
5. COMBINED GAS LAW
The combined gas law is a gas law that relates
the pressure, volume, and temperature of a gas.
It is a combination of Boyle's law, Charles's law,
and Gay-Lussac's law. The law states that the
product of the pressure and volume of a gas is
proportional to its absolute temperature,
assuming the number of particles and the
amount of gas remain constant.
Real Life Application;
It applies whenever the amount of gas remains constant, but pressure, volume, and temperature change.

• Cloud formation

The water is heated up to make water vapor where it rises into the sky to be
condensed and cooled making the volume expand creating a cloud.

• Air Conditioner

 The combined gas law is used in this section as the

pressure is increased to increase the temperature.
The combined gas law can be expressed as:

• (P₁V₁)/T₁ = (P₂V₂)/T₂

EQUATION : Where:
P₁= Initial Pressure
V₁= Initial Volume
T₁= Initial Temperature

P₂= Final pressure

V₂= Final Volume
T₂= Final Temperature
SAMPLE PROBLEM 1;
1.) What is the volume of gas at 2.00 atm and 200.0 K if its original volume
was 300.0 L at 0.250 atm and 400.0 K?

Solution:
A.) Identify the given ;
B.) FORMULA: V2

INITIAL FINAL
P₁ = 0.250 atm P2 = 2.00 atm 𝑪 . ¿ V 2=
[(0.25 0  atm ) (300   L ) (200   K )]
( 2.00  atm ) (400   K )
V₁ = 300.0 L = ?

D.) x = 18.75 L
SAMPLE PROBLEM 2:
2.) A balloon of air now occupies 10.0 L at 298.15 K and 1.00 atm. What temperature was the initial temperature, if it
occupied 9.40 L and was in a freezer with a pressure of 0.939 atm?

A.) Given
B.) FORMULA: P1 V 1 T 2
T 1=
P2 V 2
INITIAL FINAL
P₁ = 0.939 atm P2  = 1.00 atm 𝑪 . ¿𝒙=
[(0.939  atm ) (9.40  L ) (298.15 K )]
(1 atm ) ( 10  L )
V₁ = 9.40 L = 10.0 L
T₁= ? = 298.15 K
