What is part of speech?

a traditional class of words (such as


adjectives, adverbs, nouns, and verbs)
distinguished according to the kind of
idea denoted and the function
performed in a sentence.
What are the parts of
speech?

The parts of speech are:

noun, pronoun, adjective, verb,


adverb, conjunction,
preposition, and articles
NOUN

• Nouns are words that represent people, places, or


things.

Here are some examples of nouns.


• Person: soldier, Alan, cousin, lawyer
• Place: house, London, factory, shelter
• Thing. This includes:
• Objects: table, London Bridge, chisel, nitrogen, month, inch,
cooking
• Animals: aardvark, rat, shark, Mickey
NOUN IN THE SENTENCE

John loves watching the cat playing with the pink yarn.

Visiting Big Ben was a highlight of the trip to England.


PRONOUN

• A pronoun is used in the place of a noun. It substitutes the


noun in a paragraph or piece of writing to avoid repetition
of the noun.

Examples:

He, She, I, we, her, his, they, them, their, you, your

• Her aunt will be vacating next week.

• She is the girl I was talking to you about.


VERB

• Verbs are words that express physical actions.

Examples:

Jump, run, walked, eat, climb, swim, laugh, write, sing,


dance, play, swing,
VERB IN THE SENTENCE

• She sells pegs and lucky heather.

• The doctor wrote the prescription.

• Alison bought a ticket.
