SACRAMENT

OF
MATRIMONY
‘For this reason a man shall leave
his father and mother and be joined
to his wife, and the two shall
become one.’
Mt. 19:5
The 7 Sacraments and Morality

“The moral life is spiritual worship” (CCC, 2031).

What does the Church mean by this statement?
• It means that our worship of God is not limited to our liturgical celebrations.
• We also worship him by living a virtuous life.
St. Paul letter to the Romans:
“I urge you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to
offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to
God, your spiritual worship” (12:1). In other words, we
offer God our praise, adoration, and sacrifice by living his
Law of Love in our daily lives.
The 7 Sacraments and Morality
When it comes to our worship of God, the Seven Sacraments
entrusted to the Church by Christ hold the highest place of
honor. These “efficacious signs of grace” (CCC 1131) were
instituted by Christ to lead us to his Father by the power of
the Holy Spirit. The visible rites by which the Sacraments are
celebrated make present the grace which they signify in
those people who receive them with faith and the proper
disposition. The Sacraments are necessary for our
salvation: they are necessary for us to grow in holiness. Our
Christian moral life is nourished and strengthened by the
liturgy and the celebration of the Sacraments.
Sacrament of Matrimony

The Sacrament of Matrimony is a sacred bond or

covenant, between a man and a woman that
pledges them to be faithful lifelong spouses, loving
and caring for each other and lovingly raising and
guiding the children they bring into the world.
Through the sacrament the couple are given the
graces they need to be true to their pledge.

Marriage is a contract entered into FREELY

between a man and a woman. It is an
unbreakable bond founded in love and a solemn
covenant sealed by God. Marriage, therefore, is
sacred and has its own unique mission to fulfill in
society, since it is in the context of married life
that children are born and raised.
What does Matrimony celebrates?
MUTUAL SELF-GIVING
Matrimony has always had a special place in the Judeo-Christian vision as
a way of revealing God’s love in human terms. Of all human relationships,
the marriage relationships represents in the most vivid way how God
relates to us.
Recognizing the sacramental nature of marriage reminds us that in all our
attempts to give and to love, God is the principal actor, and the one
behind it all who is the source of all love.
• A symbol of God’s gift of Self, freely bestowed
The mutual giving and love between a husband and wife help us
understand Jesus’ gift of self in his death and resurrection. The gift of self
in marriage, like Jesus’ gift of self, must be freely given or it is not love at
all.
What does Matrimony celebrates?
• A countercultural vision
A Christian vision of marriage counteracts the trap of consumerism
by putting the emphasis for parners on the free gift of self to each
other rather than on the relentless quest for the “perfect”
household. The sacrament of matrimony affirms that no amount
of possessions will ever bring the hope and joy that two people
can feel when they love each other freely and generously.
• A communion of the Whole of Life
In the words of a Catholic church document, marriage is “a
communion of the whole of life.” A loving sexual relationship can
joyfully and pleasurably express that communion.

What makes you fall in love with your husband/wife?

Do you have any common interest? What are those?

Why did you get married in the Church?
We came to the church because we see the sign, the echoe of
God’s love for the church. You get married in the church when
you’re convinced that God has brought you together for His
purposes. You are brought together by God’s providence for God’s
purposes and that’s what we are celebrating at. Christ, who is the
bride groom, come to marry His people and that’s the main reason
we come to celebrate.
