7 Sacraments
The Seven Sacraments help us to remember that Christ, whom we encounter through the life of the
Church, is the Sacrament of salvation. Through the Sacraments we remember the life, ministry, and
message of Jesus, and we celebrate his risen presence and saving power as it is made real in our lives.
Here is the brief summary of each Sacrament and its connection to the moral life.
The 7 Sacraments and Morality
BAPTISM
Through the sanctifying grace received at Baptism we are
welcomed into the Christian community, our sins –
original and personal - are forgiven, and we are
spiritually reborn as a child of God. Our baptism is the
beginning of our Christian moral journey, and through it
we receive the grace we need to turn our lives toward
God and be faithful to his Commandments.
The 7 Sacraments and Morality
CONFIRMATION
Through Confirmation the grace received at Baptism is
perfected, strengthening our bond with the Church and
enriching our lives with an outpouring of the Holy Spirit. We
experience a growth in the Gifts of the Spirit to help us to
live virtuous lives in loving service to others in the name of
Christ.
The 7 Sacraments and Morality
EUCHARIST
The Eucharist is the source and summit of the moral life.
Listening to the Word of God and receiving the Body and
Blood of Christ nourishes and strengthens us to resist
temptation and to make the sacrifices needed to share
Christ’s love and justice with the world. And we also bring
our efforts at living virtuously to the Eucharist and offer them
to God the Father in union with the sacrifice of Jesus, his
Son.
The 7 Sacraments and Morality
MATRIMONY
The grace received in the Sacrament of Matrimony helps a
husband and wife to live the vocation of Christian marriage
virtuously. It helps them to be faithful to each other in
marriage and to be open to the gift of children. The
sacrament helps them to guide and educate their children to
follow God’s commandments.
The 7 Sacraments and Morality
HOLY ORDER
The grace received in the Sacrament of Holy Orders helps
bishops, priests, and deacons to live their clerical vocations
virtuously. It enables them to live chastely and to love and
serve God’s people with all their heart and soul. The
Sacrament helps them to be an example of moral living for
the People of God and to guide his people into holiness.
If we truly wish to live virtuous lives, we must participate in the
sacramental life of the Church. Christ gave these Sacraments to the
Church for our benefit, as an aid to living a holy life. If we desire and
are open to the graces they provide, our moral journey will greatly
benefit.
Summary of Sacraments
Every Christian has a vocation or calling to become holy and to spread the
Good News of Jesus Christ. Through
+ Baptism and Confirmation, we are consecrated to share in the common
priesthood of all, God’s people.
+ Catholicism celebrates two particular vocations as well in the sacraments of
Matrimony and Holy Orders. Termed as the sacraments at the service of
communion, they consecrate people to special roles of service in the Body of
Christ.
