What is Installation Arts?
OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the module, you are expected to be able to:

A. Differentiate among different type of installation art.


B. Differentiate among the types of public art.
C. Value of installation and public art.
INSTALLATION
ART:
NEW MEDIA ART
INSTALLATION ART
 Installation art is an art form designed to transform interior
or exterior spaces to achieve an effect. They are designed
and installed only in the space for which they were created.
 Installation art, composed of several genre such as:
painting, sculpture, and medium like ready – made
materials, found objects, drawing text , objects assembled
together to interact with space or art objects formed
creatively by artist. Defending on the number of objects and
the nature of display, installation spaces can range from
cluttered to minimal.
ART PRODUCTION
Installation art, is often identified with sculpture
because of its three dimensional forms and the techniques
employed in it.
The tremendous change in sculpture attitude has
influenced installation artist as a visual art work form, is
labor intensive and the artist usually works with fellow
artists and assistants with welding, carpentry, construction,
and fabrication skills because installation art involves
interaction among several things architectural participant.
CHARACTERISTICS OF
INSTALLATION ART
Space is there to be shaped, divided, enclosed but nor to
be filled.
The new sculpture tends to abandon stone, bronze and
clay, for industrial materials like iron steel, alloys, glass,
plastics celluloid, etc. which are worked on with the
blacksmith`s, the welder`s and even the carpenter tools.

applied, color is irrelevant: a work or its part can be cast.

 Ohm David made a series of wire mesh that forms a box
structure and projected light onto it from different angles.

PERFORMANCE INSTALLATION ART
 It is combined with theatre and dance. Lights and
sounds are part of the design and performance is
made under a specific span of time.
 This type of installation requires careful planning not
only for placement of the materials but more
importantly, to achieve the desired effect when
combined with lights, sounds, and the performer’s
movements.

CONCEPTUAL INSTALLATION ART

 Places emphases on an idea or concept rather than in


a tangible art object. It may include written text,
instruction, or a questions that leads the viewer to
think about an idea.

 It follows the notion that art should examine its own


nature. The role of the artist, therefore, is to make
people think and reflect through the use of an art
piece as stimulus.

PUBLIC ART
 Public art has the capability to engage audiences and
create space, whether material, virtual, or imagined where
people can identify themselves by creating renewed
reflection on community, the uses of public space and our
behavior within them.
 Public art can express community values, enhance our
environment, transform a landscape, heighten our
awareness, or question our assumptions. Placed in public
sites, this art is there for everyone, a form of collective
community expression.
 Public art is a reflection of how we see the world – the
artist’s response to our time and place combined with our
own sense of who we are.
ART PRODUCTION
 Public art was dominated by monuments to heroes and
religious landmarks. In the contemporary world, however, the
demands for artwork that reflect modern technology and
design that appeal to global taste has increased.
 This poses a challenge a challenge to artists who should
expand their knowledge, skills, artistic integrity and
creativeness. To cope with the diverse demands of the
contemporary culture, their need to expand their choice of
materials and methods and become ware of design that
appeals to global taste of public art patrons.

COMMUNITY BASED ARTS

 Refers to artistic activity base on community setting. Works


of this can be of any medium, such as found object, objects
from nature like logs or leaves that are found in the
community, for as long as they engage the members of the
community in interaction or dialogue with the artist.

MUNICIPAL ART
 It is typically located in a squares, plaza, or in the front of
government buildings, law courts, airports, public museum
or Academic Institutions. The purpose of this type of public
art is to instill patriotism and nationalism among the
community members. It also serve as a historical
landmark to educate the young and inform the visitor and
tourist.

of public art design their artworks considering its interaction
with sunlight and wind and its position it in harmony with its
surroundings.

community members and visitors.

Mixed Media Arts
Refers to a combinations of media and creative
variations of design, composition, color, and texture. It
can be a combination of a painting and photographs,
or stones embedded on concrete, ink with pastel, or
layers of textile painted with acrylic.
MATERIALS AND MEDIM TO BE
USED
 Materials used to create mixed media art include, but are not
limited to, paint, cloth, paper, wood and found objects.
 It can be a combination of photograph and painting, or
stones embedded on wood for example.
 Ink can combine with pastel, or layers of textile painted
with acrylic. art can also be used to express political
views, social statements or reaction to an issue. The
things put together can represent something: an idea,
protest, bias, a position, a challenge. In mixed media the
theme is as good as any order.
TECHNIQUES USED
IN MIXED MEDIA:

COLLAGE
 It is an artistic composition of materials and objects pasted
over a flat surface and usually hung on the wall.
 Or a form visual arts in which visual elements are
combined to create a new image that conveys a message
or idea.
 It comes from the French word “coler”, which means “to
glue”, often primary means of combining image in collage
art.

small squares from used cloth
and put them together to make a
portrait that can fool the eye as
they look like pixels that form the

“ PEOPLE`S FLOWERS “.

EFREN G. LOZANES

 uses photography and


combines it with paint to
express views of social
reality. He goes around the
town and keenly observes
life as it is lived by human
beings. He delights at the
sight of random scenes and
activities of people
ASSEMBLAGE

 It is putting together objects and combining them in


new contexts. Assemblage employs any method of
joining or fastening to make a three dimension
object.
MATERIALS AND MEDIUM TO MAKE
MIXED MEDIA ART:
 In three – dimensional mixed media artworks such as
assemblage, some artists stuff the objects, including birds,
pillow or other things whose internal parts can be replaced
and transformed creatively into an artwork.

OMAR DAGDAYAN

 combines painting and


sculpture in his
assemblage entitled
“John Lennon”. He used
a real playing guitar. The
effect is a natural look of
the musician John
Lennon.
BOHOL ARTIST, SAM
PENASO

 He goes to junk shops to


gather used metals of all
sorts. After a process of
welding, hammering,
painting, twisting, and
doing creative
assemblage, the junk is
transformed to an artwork
deserving to decorate a 5
star hotel.

Araneta

 is another artist who


gathers seashells and
other objects found
along the shore, put them
together in a playful and
creative way and
produces an assemblage
of musical instrument
Sam and Mel

 are examples of
practitioners of assemblage
with imaginative and
technical fertility. For these
artists, there seems to be
delight in re – using
garbage or junk from the
industrial world as they are,
waiting to be transformed
into artworks.

technology which allowed photographers to manipulate their
images to fit their artistic expression.

C. PHOTOGRAPHIC ALTERATION
 
 Photography can also offer an illusion and this challenge the
standpoint of fidelity of appearance. This creates, according
to Feldman, An illusion of objectivity and factual authenticity
that establishes photography.

D. MOBILE PHOTOGRAPHY
 It is taking pictures using a mobile phone. Depending on the
cellphone camera quality and image resolution, photos can
be printed as big as 8”x10”, however, if it is printed bigger,
the photograph looks blurry and pixelated because of the
limited image resolution.

FANTASY DIGITAL ART

 They create worlds, universe, imaginary creatures and


combine colors that transport the viewer to another world
that seem boundless and immensely broad. They take
inspiration from myths, legends fantasy, stories or create
their own visual narrative.

DIGITAL ART AS DESIGNED

 Contemporary art design is popular among people in


urban places. Because of its digital form, these designs
are easily spread and shared electronically. There is
also a growing need for artistic environment to
complement the lifestyle of the growing number of
professional.

Leopard

 He combines watercolor and digital


art to make a floral design art to
make a floral design surrounding a
leopard. This makes leopard look
harmless and tamed. The
composition is diagonal and there is
a blend of soft and heavy lines that
distinguish the main subject, the
leopard, from the flora and fauna
that surround it.
