NG BAYAN (GAMABA)
NATIONAL LIVING TREASURES

 1988 National Folk Artists award –


initiated by the Rotary Organization, gave
recognition to outstanding Filipino artists
(music and poetry)

 Highlights the diversity in our heritage and


cultural traditions
NATIONAL LIVING TREASURES

 Traditional art allows us to envision


ourselves as one nature and a people of
distinct culture.

 The search for the excellent traditional


artists was carried out by NCCA

 Institutionalized in April 1992


NATIONAL LIVING TREASURES

 Republic Act No. 7355 – promotes the


transfer of the unique skill of the living
treasures to others to further the
appreciation and to show pride about the
masters of these crafts
MANLILIKHA NG BAYAN

 Defined as:
A citizen engaged in any traditional art
(uniquely Filipino)
 With distinctive skills that have reached such a
high level of technical and artistic excellence
 Skills have been passed on to and widely
practiced by the present generation in his
community with the same degree of technical
and artistic competence.
QUALIFICATIONS

 He/she is an inhabitant of an
indigenous/traditional cultural community
anywhere in the Philippines that has
preserved indigenous customs, beliefs,
rituals, and traditions and/or has
syncretized whatever external elements that
have influenced it.
QUALIFICATIONS

 Must have engaged in folk art tradition that


has been in existence and documented for at
least 50 years.

 Must have consistently performed or


produced works that are of superior and
distinctive quality over a significant
period of time.
QUALIFICATIONS

 Must possess a mastery of tools and


materials needed by the art, and must have
an established reputation in the art as
master and maker of works of extraordinary
technical quality.
QUALIFICATIONS

 Must have passed on or will pass on to


other members of the community their skills
in the folk art for which the community is
traditionally known.

 A poet, epic-chanter, story-teller and a


musician from Palawan
 A master of playing traditional music
instruments such as basal, aroding (mouth
harp), and babarak (ring flute).
 Traditional songs such as kulilal and bagit
(vocal music)
 Chants tultul (epics), sudsungit (narratives),
and tuturan (myths)

 Most honored kudyapi master and teacher


in Maganoy, Mindanao at age 35
 Proficient in playing kulintang, agong,
tambul gandingan, and palendag (lip-valley
flute)

LANG DULAY

 Master dreamweaver (textile weaver) from


T’boli, Lake Sebu, South Cotabato
 At age 12 learned how to weave using Abaca
fibers
 Mastered her abaca to be pure and become
as fine as hair.
SALINTA MONON

 A Bagobo born in Bansalan, Davao del Sur


 A master weaver of the abaca plant
 She taught women in her community the art
of weaving
 Her favorite design was called the
“binuwaya” (crocodile)
ALONZO SACLAG

 From Lubuagan, Kalinga


 Preserved artifacts such as the kalinga gong
(gangsa)
 A master of dance and the performing arts
 He was an artist who mainly relied on his
experiences concerning performing art
 Established the Kalinga Budong Dance
Troupe travelling the world to represent and
educate the people about the Kalinga
performing art
FREDERICO CABALLERO

 An epic-chanter from Kalinog, Iloilo


 Worked for the documentation of the epics
and oral literature of his people
 He is considered a bantugan or a person
who has attained distinction in his
community.
 Now, 79 years old
UWANG AHADAS

 A Yakan from Lamitan, Basilan


 73 yrs. Old
 Taught young people how to play
kwintangan kayo, and tuntungan
 Became a teacher of playing kwintangan
outside Lamitan
 He teaches hands-on applying the method of
learning-by-doing
DARHATA SAWABI

 A weaver of pis syabit, a traditional cloth


tapestry worn as a head cover by the
Tausugs of Jolo, Sulu
 Taught women in her community the art of
weaving
EDUARDO MUTUC

 From Apalit, Pampanga who dedicated his


life to creating religious and secular art in
silver, bronze, and wood
 Retablos, mirrors, altars, carozas
HAJA AMINA APPI

 Born in Tawi-Tawi
 Master mat weaver among the Sama
indigenous community
 Colorful mats with complex geometric
patterns exhibited precise proportion and
symmetry
TEOFILO GARCIA

 Born in San Quintin, Abra


 Known for making the tabungaw, an all-
weather head gear made from an upo
gourd and has a rattan lining
 If properly handled, it can last upto 3-4
generations
MAGDALENA GAMAYO

 From Pinili, Ilocos Norte


 A master weaver of inabel, a handwoven
cloth of the Ilocanos
 Traditional patterns such as binakol,
inuritan (geometric), kusikos (spirals), and
sinan-sabong (flowers)
 At 92, she still works at the Manlilikha ng
Bayan weaving center
