BASIC LIFE SUPPORT

If in the assessment you found


interference on one of the
components:

• Blockage of the airway


• No Breath
• No pulse

You must perform actions that are known


“Basic Life Support”
Vital Signs
1. Normal Pulse
• Infants 120-150 x / min
• Children 80-150 x / min
• Adult 60-90 x / min

2. Normal breathing frequency


• Infants 25-50 x / min
• Children 15-30 x / min
• Adult 12-20 x / min

3. The body temperature of 37 C


4. Blood pressure
5. Skin

For example; electrical wires, gases,


aggressive relatives, water, etc.

• Ask or Look around


• Introduce Yourself
• Remove yourself and the casualty to an area of safety
Response

Check the casualty for a response.

Use the COWS Method


• C an you hear me?
• O pen your eyes
• W hat is your name?
• S queeze my hand
Gently squeeze shoulders
(i.e. the trapezoid muscle)

If no sign of life, casualty is unresponsive, call for help.


Send for Help

Call Ambulance to reach emergency services virtually anywhere in


the world.

Or
notify your Cardiac Arrest team within the hospital.

Check Breathing : LOOK – LISTEN – FEEL
• Look at the chest.
• Listen for air escaping
• Feel for air escaping and chest rising
( up to 10 seconds )

No longer recommended to deliver rescue breaths but rather


continue straight to CPR.

2010 : C A B (Compression – Airway – Breathing)
CPR
(cardiopulmonary resuscitation)

If no signs of life..
– unconscious,
not breathing
and not moving, start CPR

CPR involves giving;


• 30 compression and 2 breaths
• 100 compressions per minute
