USAGE OF THE DEFINITE ARTICLE

• We use the definite article when we want to point out specific nouns and entities;
• The signals that the noun is definite, that it refers to a particular member of a group
that is one of a kind;
• If we use The before an entity, it means there is only one of that thing in the world;
• The definite article occurs both before countable and uncountable nouns in singular
and plural form;
USE OF THE

• Use the article to refer to unique people or objects;


Ex: Clouds appeared across the sky.
• Before ordinal numbers and superlatives;
Ex: the second time, the highest building;
• With adjectives, when referring to a whole group of people;
Ex: The Rich, The French, The Elderly;
• With decades;
Ex: She was born in the eighties.
USE OF THE

• With clauses introduced by only;


Ex: This is the only dress I like in this store.
• Newspaper names;
Ex: I read The Sun every morning.
• Names of famous buildings, works of art, museums, or monuments;
Ex: The Louvre, The Mona Lisa, The Eiffel Tower, The Vietnam Memorial;
•  Names of hotels & restaurants, unless these are named after a person;
Ex: The Ritz in London is a world-famous, five-star hotel.
GEOGRAPHICAL USE OF THE

Do use the before:


• Names of oceans, rivers and seas: the Atlantic, the Thames, the Dead Sea;
• Geographical areas: the West, the Middle East;
• Points on the globe: the North Pole, the Equator;
• Deserts, forests, peninsulas and gulfs: the Sahara, the Black Forest, the Argolic
Gulf, the Balkan peninsula;
GEOGRAPHICAL USE OF THE

Do not use the before:


• Names of most countries/territories: Turkey, France, Spain;
Note: countries that include the words "republic", "kingdom", or "states" in their
names take the definite article like the Dominican Republic, the United Kingdom,
the United States;
• Names of cities, states or towns: London, California, Manitoba;
• Names of streets: Carnaby Street, Via Dolorosa Street;

Do not use the before:


• Names of lakes and bays: Lake Victoria, Lake Titicaca, San Francisco Bay;
Note: use the definite article with a group of lakes like the Great Lakes;
• Names of mountains: Mount Everest, Mont Blanc;
Note: use the definite article with ranges of mountains like the Alps, the Andes;
• Names of continents: Africa, Europe;
• Names of islands: Bali, Tahiti;
Note: use the definite article with island chains like the Kuril Islands, the Hebrides;
WHEN NOT TO USE THE DEFINITE ARTICLE

• With names of languages;


Examples:
It’s not hard to learn Turkish.
Yes, English can be weird. It can be understood through tough thorough
thought, though.
• With people’s names;
Ex: Percy Shelley was one of the major English Romantic poets.
WHEN NOT TO USE THE DEFINITE ARTICLE

• With titles when combined with names;


Ex: President Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas.
• After the ‘s possessive case;
Ex: John’s car is over there.
• With professions;
Ex: Engineering is a well-paid career.
WHEN NOT TO USE THE DEFINITE ARTICLE

• Do not use the definite articles with names


of meals;
Ex: I usually skip breakfast.
Note: we usually add the definite article when
we want to talk about a particular or special
meal as in ex:
I got the chance to meet him at the dinner
given by the Smiths.
WHEN NOT TO USE THE DEFINITE ARTICLE

• Do not use the with years;


Ex: She was born in 1997.
Important: the definite article is usually omitted before places when they are
used for their primary purpose, as in ex:
He goes to school; She is in jail because of committing homicide;
But
Mary went to the school to see her son; He went to the jail in which his friend
was;
OTHER USAGES OF THE DEFINITE ARTICLE

Use the definite article with some conditions and diseases like:
• The mumps, the measles, the creeps, the flu;
Ex. The mumps is a contagious disease.
If you catch the flu, you should visit a doctor.
Usually small children catch the measles.
OTHER USAGES OF THE DEFINITE ARTICLE

However, there are some other cases and exceptions when you shouldn’t use
the definite article before some conditions or illnesses. In those cases you use
the zero article;
• Arthritis, hypertension, cancer;
Correct usage: My grandfather has arthritis.
Incorrect usage: My grandfather has the arthritis.
OTHER USAGES OF THE DEFINITE ARTICLE

You also use the definite article with:


• With countable and uncountable nouns that have been mentioned before;
Ex: She bought a bag this morning. The bag was very fashionable.
• The definite article can also refer forwards to something that is going to be
mentioned.
Ex: Could you give me the pen which I gave you?
