• Enumerate good practices in designing layout & content


of training aids

• Describe good practices for a preparing a power point

Purpose

• Sets out objectives/learning outcomes & content


for benefit of students; effective tool for managing
student expectations & preparations for lesson

• Extremely useful for sessions in which students


are required to undertake supervised activities

• Particularly important for sessions when power


point is NOT the main teaching aid
Layout & Content
• Identification of service dept. if part of module

• Course, location, title of session

• SMART objectives

• Details of pre lesson reading

• Description of activities including assesment

• Sources of reference material

• Name of person who prepared plan & date of


preparation/revision
Good practices for preparation
• Prepare using at least 14 point arial font

• Use bold text for heading & avoid faint text at all times

• Avoid excessive use of capitalisation, underlininig &


italicisation

• Leave plenty of space b/w blocks of text

• follow standard template if devised by institution

• Disribution: well before actual training program of possible


( e mail/website) or with handouts at start of training

Purpose

 Provides a practical framework & aide-memoire for lectures & training


sessions

 For benefit of instructors

 Together with lessons plans they help a colleague deliver a session in


your place if need arises

 Contains two elements: core points incld. examples to be highlighted


& information of process by which that content is to be delivered
Layout & Content
 Course title

 Lesson title

 Date , time, & location of session

 Requirements – handouts, equipments, evaluation sheets,


any special instructions

 Subheadings with timing guidelines

 At end of document – initials, date of revision & file name


given to document
Good practices for preparation

 Notes must be simple & clear

 Use a large font ( min. 14 points)

 Leave substantial amount of white space

 Embolden headings

 Embolden/italicise point you wish to emphasise


Handouts
Purpose

 To principally reduce the amount of time trainees spend


in copying notes, diagrams from board/screen

 To serve as information sheet

 To serve as guide to use a resource eg a database

 To serve as a source of reference

 Individuals/ trainers choice

 Identification of the person who has prepared, date of preparation/revision

 Follow house style if any

 Typed & Use headings & page no consistently

 Use bullet points rather than continuous prose

 Use at least 12 point font

 Avoid excessive italicisation/capitalisation/underlining

Checklist of good practices for preparing a
power point presentation
 Keep your presentation simple & clear
 It is not meant to transmit all information but to highlight
main points and help trainees structure their notes
 Keep designs & layout simple & use no more than six
bullet points
 Use one topic for each slide
 Use main headings & sub headings
 Use simple words/ keywords rather than sentences

 Limit the number of slides for example not more than 12 for a ten
minute presentation

 Ensure text contrasts with the background

 Standardize positions, colors & styles

 Use only one or two animations/ transition effects

 For database demonstrations add steps in between the portal

 Ensure adequate time for projector warm up

 Use a sans serif font such as Arial/comic sans as they are easier to read

 While using color don’t use yellow/light green as they do not show well at
end of theatre

 Use wider spacing

 Depending on size of room the font size should be at least 18 point


preferably 24 point & sometimes 30 points

 Use no more than two font sizes

 Avoid acronyms

 Familiarize with equipment handling

 Do not obstruct the view
