Learning Happens in The Garden
One of the special feature of An-Nur childcare is the An-Nur garden. An-Nur children as well as
teachers are so proud of their garden. Children love to go to the garden, to get busy with
gardening activities, to explore, to dig, to water the plants. Children also like to observe
excitedly to see how the plants grow. Alhamdulil Allah we have grown so many potatoes this
year as well as some other things eg. tomatoes, beans, lettuces, strawberries etc..
Khaled was so interested in garden activities. Any chance he would get he would end up in the
garden. He loves water the plants and look at different plant to see how they are growing. Kahled
loves exploring and what better place then explore the garden. He is learning so much in the
garden, ma sha Allah.
The most obvious learning is – children learn how things grow. The act of caring the plants helps
children learn the responsibility. They learn in order to keep the plants alive they need to be
watered regularly. Nurturing plants from seed to harvest helps children develop a sense of self
confidence.
Gardening activity helps children to use all the senses. Children learn best when engaging all
their senses. Children have opportunity to understand the life cycle of plants as they observe:
the seed- to plant- to flower-to fruit- to seed again.
Gardening is a great way to encourage children the importance of eating healthy food,
strengthen their healthy eating habit. What they grow they love to eat fresh from the garden.
