    Sir Isaac Newton developed three laws of motion based on his work in physics and calculus. The first law states that an object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. The second law states that acceleration is produced by a force acting on an object, and greater force is needed to accelerate objects with greater mass. The third law states that for every action force there is an equal and opposite reaction force.

    • There was this fellow in England named Sir
    Isaac Newton. A little bit stuffy, bad hair, but
    quite an intelligent guy. He worked on
    developingcalculus and physics at the same
    time. During his work, he came up with the
    three basic ideas that are applied to the
    physics of most motion (NOTmodern physics
    ). The ideas have been tested and verified so
    many times over the years, that scientists now
    call them Newton's Three Laws of Motion.

    • What does this mean?
    This means that there is a natural
    tendency of objects to keep on doing what
    they're doing. All objects resist changes
    in their state of motion. In the absence
    of an unbalanced force, an object in
    motion will maintain this state of motion.

    Because of inertia, objects (including you) resist changes
    in their motion. When the car going 80 km/hour is stopped
    by the brick wall, your body keeps moving at 80 m/hour.

    LAW OF MOTION

    Acceleration is produced when a force acts on a mass. The greater the


    mass (of the object being accelerated) the greater the amount of force
    needed (to accelerate the object).
     What does this mean?
    Everyone unconsiously knows the Second
    Law. Everyone knows that heavier
    objects require more force to move the

    Mike's car, which weighs 1,000 kg, is out of gas. Mike is


    trying to push the car to a gas station, and he makes the car
    go 0.05 m/s/s. Using Newton's Second Law, you can

    This means that for every force there
    is a reaction force that is equal in
    size, but opposite in direction. That is
    to say that whenever an object
    pushes another object it gets pushed
    back in the opposite direction equally
    hard.
    The rocket's action is to push down on the
    ground with the force of its powerful
    engines, and the reaction is that the ground
    pushes the rocket upwards with an equal
    force.

    The reaction of a rocket is

    fuels are burned in the
    engine, producing hot
    gases.
    The hot gases push against
    the inside tube of the rocket
    and escape out the bottom
    of the tube. As the gases
    move downward, the rocket
    moves in the opposite
    direction.
