What is matter?

Matter- anything that takes up space and can be weighed.

Mass- property of all matter.
•The mass of an object is the same no matter where the object is

•The only way to change the mass of an object is to change the amount of matter that
makes up the object

How do you measure mass?

■It is measure by a scale or triple beam balance.

■It’s base unit is grams.

Mass vs weight
Weight is a measure of the force of gravity

An object’s weight can change depending on its location in the universe.

Volume-
•An object’s volume is the amount of space it fills
Measuring volume of a liquid-
■Graduated cylinder
■Displacement method
■Measured in liters (L) & milliliters (mL)

Measuring volume of regular shaped object (3-D)

Formula- tells us the number of atoms of each element in a compound

Units - standards for measurement of physical quantities that need clear definitions to be
useful

Measuring volume of irregular shaped object

If you can’t measure the length, width and height of an object, you must use the
displacement method
Displacement method- used to accurately measure the volume of the human body and
other oddly shaped objects by measuring the volume of fluid displaced when the object is
submerged
1. Fill a beaker or graduated cylinder with enough water to completely immerse the
object in.
2. Record the baseline initial measurement
3. Drop the object in
4. Record final measurement
5. Subtract the initial volume from the final volume ~ this is the volume of the sphere!

Measuring the volume of gas-

■Since a gas expands to fill its container, if you know the volume of the container, you
know the volume of the gas.

What is Density?
■Density is the amount of how much space an object or substance takes up
■Density equals mass divided by volume
■For example, a golf ball and a table-tennis ball have similar volumes. But a golf ball has
more mass than a table-tennis ball does. So, the golf ball has a greater density.

Density of Solids

Which square is more dense? Which square is more dense?

_________number

2__________________________________________________________

Density of Solids
■Knowing the density of a substance can also tell you if the substance will float or sink in

water. Density of water is an object that is more dense than water will sink
