GASTEG – formed in 1997, a self-financing entity, operating with 2 full-time
contract clerical staffs, with a Director, 2 part-time Deputy Directors, 2 part-time Training Coordinators, a full-time Research Officer and 2 post-graduate students. Currently GASTEG is operating from an office allocated by the Faculty of Chemical and Natural Resources Engineering at Block N01, Room 150. Introduction Main activities : 1. Conducting training for competent personnel in the gas industry 2. Conducting and co-conducting (CEPP) other training courses relevant to the gas and related industries 3. Undertaking research – NGV, Gas piping system, Gas Calibration, Gas Network etc. 4. Embarking on Information Dissemination (cum Marketing) activities – Developing web base and CD information system, actively involve with the relevant Authority and Gas Industry activities – conferences, seminars, and safety awareness programs, leading and actively participating in gas related standard formation body, and dissemination knowledge and information through published works in Journals, National and International Conferences and internal technical papers 5. Rendering Service and Consultancy to the related industries – producing SimGas ver1.3 software for piping design, determination of Sulphur content in Malaysian Gas, Calibrating meters, Petroleum Product Analysis and Testing (with UNIPEM), Expert advice on product selection, Service GASTEG Objectives
By 2010, GASTEG being the centre of
excellence of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, will self-generate an income through the following plans Training
Conduct 50 courses per year base on 25 module for
1000 participant with the rate of RM20,000/course which amount to 50% (RM1 million) of the total income Service and Consultancy
2 Provide services which include 5 of the areas listed below, of
accredited testing and calibration for 100 client which amount to 12.5% (RM0.25 million) of the total income Areas : Safety, Burner design, combustion, Corrosion, Pipeline design, SCADA, Liquefaction, Storage, Software development, Material, Metering, Project Management, Chemical Plant, Oil refinery, Gas Processing, Energy Management, Catalyst Technology, CFD, Risk Management, NGV, Environment, Calibration, Testing and Separation Process Research
3 Secure Research and Development Grant worth
RM0.5 million which amount to 25% of the total income Information Dissemination
4 Being a resource centre, disseminate information
through the website in the form of bulletin, data base, technical report, codes of practise etc and generate an income which amount to 12.5% (RM0.25 million) of the total income Expert Groups 5 Formation of 20 experts group among the following areas Areas : Safety, Burner design, combustion, Corrosion, Pipeline design, SCADA, Liquefaction, Storage, Software development, Material, Metering, Project Management, Chemical plant, Oil Refinery, Gas Processing, Energy Management, Catalyst Technology, CFD, Risk Management, NGV, Environment, Calibration, Testing and Separation Process GASTEG Strategy
To fulfil the objectives set, GASTEG,
will need to strategize its operation by undertaking the following action plans Training 1 Affiliates itself to national and international gas centres 2 Identify and provide training in gas field 3 Identify and acquire fund for the activities 4 Obtain/Outsource qualified staff 5 Acquire software license use in training 6 Conduct training at clients premises 7 Adopt active national and international marketing approach 8 Acquire accreditation for the training program 9 Prepare data base for GASTEG-ALUMNI 10 Prepare and conduct online training modules Service and Consultancy 1 Provide state-of-art facilities and acquire national and international recognition/accreditation 2 Staff development 3 Identify and provide services to the market 4 Create Fellowship Scheme 5 Acquire fund from UTM, Petroleum Cess Fund, Energy Commission, NIOSH and etc Research 1 Identify potential clients for contract research grant 2 Identify researchable areas from the market 3 Create Research Fellowship Scheme Information Dissemination 1 Provide data base for appropriate areas 2 Produce bulletin 3 Staff development 4 Provide dedicated server 5 Create advertisement through the web Expert Groups

1. It was set up when the demand for the application
of information technology becomes important 2. Responsible for the development of the information technology division in GASTEG 3. The unit provide assistance for the gas industry regarding the development and the utilization of information technology 4. Market and enhance expertise and product Endowment Fund 1. Endowment fund required is estimated RM20 million. 2. The fund all needed to undertake activities that has been planned. 3. The fund requested is for the construction cost and the operation cost of a new GASTEG building. Conclusion 1. Activities planned are regarded as part of the objectives of GASTEG. 2. GASTEG succeeded in fostering close relationship with various party involve in the gas industry in Malaysia. This relationship managed to generate smart partnership with the gas industry 3. GASTEG has been and will remain as a reference center for the gas industry regarding training, R & D, service and consultancy and information in gas technology 4. Funding is utmost important in succeeding the implementation of GASTEG’s activities.
