AT8091 – MANUFACTURING OF AUTOMOTIVE COMPONENTS

Material Selection and Manufacturing process of
 Cylinder Block and Head
 Piston
 Piston Rings
 Cylinder Liner
 Oil Pan
CLASS 05 – LEARNING OUTCOME

 Need of Coating Process

 Coating material’s used

 Types of Coating Process

NEED OF COATING PROCESS

 To reduce wear

 To have the capability to work at high temperature

 To have better sustainability

FAILURED COMPONENTS DUE TO HEAT
COATING MATERIAL & IT’S CHARACTERISTICS
 Zirconates
 low sintering activity
 Low thermal conductivity
 Good thermal cycling resistance
 High thermal expansion coefficient – Because of this
residual stress occur in the coating so that coating
delaminates
COATING MATERIAL & IT’S CHARACTERISTICS

 Yittria Stabilized Zirconia

 High thermal shock resistance
 Low thermal conductivity
 High thermal expansion coefficient -
Phase transformation at 1443 degree K and sintering
above 1473 degree K

 Alumina
 It has very high hardness and chemical inertness
 Relatively high thermal conductivity
 Low thermal expansion coefficient
COATING MATERIAL & IT’S CHARACTERISTICS

 Yittria Stabilized Zirconia

 High thermal shock resistance
 Low thermal conductivity
 High thermal expansion coefficient -
Phase transformation and poor sintering ability

 Alumina
 It has very high hardness and chemical inertness
 Relatively high thermal conductivity
 Low thermal expansion coefficient
Even though alumina alone is not a good thermal barrier coating
candidate, its addition to Yittria stabilized Zirconia can increase the
hardness of the coating and improve the oxidation resistance of the
substrate
COATING MATERIAL & IT’S CHARACTERISTICS

 Garnets:
 Polycrystalline garnet ceramics are used - due to their
unique properties.
 It is a good choice for many high-temperature
applications, due to its excellent high temperature
properties and phase stability.
PHYSICAL VAPOR DEPOSITION (PVD)

PVD – Video Presentation

It is a new technique which is mostly applied to make a thin
layer of ceramic coating applied to combustion chamber
components (Piston crown, Valves and cylinder walls) to
increase the thermal efficiency and wear resistance.
TYPES OF TBC
 Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD)
 Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD)
 Thermal Spray Coating Process
 Plasma Spray Coating Process
