HENRY’S LAW

DEFINITION

O At a constant temperature, the amount of a

given gas that dissolves in a given type and
volume of liquid is directly proportional to the
partial pressure of that gas in equilibrium with
that liquid.

(1)
O An equivalent way of stating the law is that
the solubility of a gas in a liquid is directly
proportional to the pressure of the gas. Henry's
Law has since been shown to apply for a wide
range of dilute solutions, not merely those of
gases.

Henry’s Law Solubility Constant

O p is the partial pressure of the solute above the

solution
O c is the concentration of the solute in the solution (in
one of its many units)
O kH is the Henry's Law constant, which has units such
as L··atm/mol or atm/(mole fraction) or Pa · m3/mol
(7)
when a gas is in contact with the surface of a liquid, the amount of the gas
which will go into solution is proportional to the partial pressure of that gas.
(9)(4)
Henry’s Law Volatility Constant

Op is the partial pressure of the solute above the
solution
OX is the mole fraction of A in the solution (in
one of its many units)
OkH is the Henry's Law constant, which has units
such as L··atm/mol or atm/(mole fraction) or Pa
· m3/mol
