together as a conceptual unit,
typically forming a component of a
clause.
WHAT IS THE USE OF PHRASE

A phrase is a group or words that

express a concept and is used as a
unit within a sentence.
WHY PHRASES ARE IMPORTANT
Words are the smallest units of a language that have
meaning, whereas phrases are words that have distinct
meanings as groups, which the component words
themselves cannot convey. So, for the English language
learner, learning phrases will be more meaningful and
useful than just learning words by themselves.

iii) I met him on the road.

From this examples we can see that there is no verb

or subject.
WHAT IS CLAUSE

definition, it must contain a subject and a verb.
EXAMPLES OF CLAUSE

ii) I shall not go if it rains.

From this example we can find that there is a verb

and subject in the sentences.
TYPES OF CLAUSE

i) Independent Clause
ii) Dependent Clause
INDEPENDENT CLAUSE
Independent Clause is a clause that can stand by
itself as a simple sentence.

In independent clause there are two sub-clauses:

a) Main Clause
b) Principle Clause
DEPENDENT CLAUSE
Dependent Clause is a clause that provides a
sentence element with additional information, but
which cannot stand alone as a sentence.

In independent clause there is one sub-clause:

a) Subordinate Clause
EXAMPLES OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF CLAUSES

a) Tara ate the chasse roll after she watched the news.

In this sentence ‘Tara ate the chasse roll’ is

independent clause and ‘she watched the news’ is
dependent clause.

clause or phrase to a noun or pronoun.

RELATIVE CLAUSE
Relative clauses are clauses starting with
the relative pronouns who, that, which,
whose, where, when.
TYPES OF RELATIVE CLAUSE
i) Defining Clause: A Defining relative clause
usually comes immediately after the noun it
describes.

hospital was very kind.

information to the sentence but the
sentence still has the same meaning.
