Rotating Magnetic Field
• Two interacting magnetic fields present in a
machine produce torque intended to line up the
magnetic fields
– Rotor and Stator case
• Rotor aligns itself with stator field
– Possibility of making stator field rotate
• Rotor will keep following the rotating field
• Principle of AC machine operation
Rotating Stator Magnetic Field
• 3-Phase set of currents flowing in 3-phase
windings
– Electrically 1200 apart
– Currents in three coils aa’, bb’, cc’

– Magnetic field intensity

Rotating Stator Magnetic Field
• Magnetic field intensity
vector due to current in
aa’
– Sinusoidal variation in
magnitude
– Direction constant
• For coils bb’, cc’
Magnetic Flux for 3-Phase current
• Magnetic flux density

• For 3-Phase currents

• Where
• For wt = 00

• Total field density

Rotating Magnetic Field
• wt = 900

Rotating Magnetic Field
•

𝐵𝑛𝑒𝑡(𝑡)=(1.5𝐵𝑀𝑠𝑖𝑛𝜔𝑡)𝑥^−(1.5𝐵𝑀cos𝜔𝑡)^𝑦
Rotating Magnetic Field
• Field to have same magnitude 1.5BM
– Proof provided (Sec 4.2)
• Rotates with changing wt
Speed and Electrical Frequency
• Poles consideration
– North – where flux leaves stator
– South – where flux enters stator
• Complete one mechanical rotation for one
electrical cycle
– Mechanical speed of rotation = electrical frequency
Speed and Electrical Frequency
Speed and Electrical Frequency
•  Twice the number of windings

– Twice the number of poles

• Four poles created instantaneously
• Mechanical motion of 1800 for 3600 electrical degrees
Speed and Electrical Frequency
• For
P number of poles, P/2 repetitions of
windings sets
Reversing the Direction of Rotation
• Swap current in any two of the three coils
– Direction of field rotation to be reversed
– Direction of rotation to be reversed
