    WHAT IS MEANT BY DRUG?


    A DRUG IS ANY SUBSTANCE THAT WHEN ABSORBED INTO THE BODY OF A LIVING
    ORGANISM ALTERS NORMAL BODILY FUNCTION.

    MEANING OF ADDICTION
    ADDICTION IS A PHYSIOLOGICAL AND PHYSICAL INABILITY TO STOP CONSUMING
    A CHEMICAL, DRUGS OR SUBSTENCE EVEN THOUGH IT IS CAUSING
    PHYSIOLOGICAL AND PHYSICAL HARM.
    CLASSIFICATION OF DRUGS

    THERE ARE A LARGE NUMBER OF DRUGS ON WHICH


    PEOPLE BECOME DEPENDENT. THESE ARE
    CLASSIFIED INTO FOUR MAJOR GROUPS:
    SEDATIVES AND TRANQUILIZERS, OPIATE
    NARCOTICS, STIMULANTS AND HALLUCINOGENS.

    HOW DOES DRUG ADDICTION BEGIN ?

    THERE ARE MANY FACTORS THAT LEAD PEOPLE TO DRUG ADDICTION


    1. CURIOSITY
    2. FRIEND’S PRESSURE
    3. FRUSTRATION AND DEPRESSION
    4. RELIEF FROM PAIN
    5. FAMILY HISTORY
    6. EXCITEMENT AND ADVENTURE
    SOCIAL DISEASE-SMOKING, DRINKING
    AND USE OF DRUGS
    • SMOKING AND DRINKING AND USE OF DRUGS FREQUENTLY OR
    REGULARLY ARE SOCIAL DISEASES. THEY ADVERSELY AFFECT TO
    HEALTH OF THE ADDICTS AND THE SOCIETY.
    • A LARGE NUMBER OF OUR YOUNG MEN AND WOMEN HAVE TAKEN
    TO INTOXICANTS. ABOUT 87.6% DRUG ADDICTS ARE BETWEEN THE
    AGE OF 14 AND 25 YRS.
    TOBACCO
    TOBACCO IS USED FOR SMOKING, CHEWING AND
    SNUFFING. ITS MAIN STIMULATING COMPONENT IS
    POISONOUS VOLATILE NICOTINE WHICH CAUSES
    ADDICTION. NICOTINE SYNTHESIS OCCURS IN THE
    ROOTS OF THE PLANT BUT IT IS STORED IN LEAF.

    EFFECT OF NICOTINE
    INCREASED BLOOD PRESSURE DUE TO SMOKING
    CHANCES THE RISK OF HEART DISEASES RELAXES THE
    MUSCLES.
    ALCOHOL
    • ADDICTION TO ALCOHOL IS CALLED ALCOHOLISM.
    ALCOHOLICS ARE FOUND IN ALL SECTION OF
    SOCIETY.
    • ALCOHOL IS TAKEN IN LOW CONCENTRATION, AS
    THE BEER AND WINE IN RELATIVELY HIGH
    CONCENTRATION AS BRANDY, WHISKEY, VODKA
    ETC.
    • BY THE TIME THEY REALIZE THAT DRINKING IN
    ADVERSELY AFFECTING THEM, IT IS TOO LATE TO
    GIVE IT UP

    WHY PEOPLE TAKE TO DRINKING


     FEELING OF INDEPENDENCE
     DESIRE TO ESCAPE FROM SUCH REALITIES OF LIFE
    AS DISAPPOINTMENTS
    AND FAILURES.
    EFFECT OF DRUGS

    • A WEAKENED IMMUNE SYSTEM,


    INCREASING THE RISK OF ILLNESS AND
    INFECTION.
    • HEART CONDITIONS RANGING FROM
    ABNORMAL HEART RATES TO HEART
    ATTACKS AND COLLAPSED VEINS AND
    BLOOD VESSEL INFECTION FROM
    INJECTED DRUGS.
    • NAUSEA AND ABDOMINAL PAIN, WHICH
    CAN ALSO LEAD TO CHANGES IN
    APPETITE AND WEIGHT LOSS.
    PREVENTION AND CONTROL
    • AVOID UNDUE PEER PRESSURE
    • EDUCATION AND COUNSELING
    • SEEKING HELP FROM PARENTS AND PEERS
    • LOOKING FOR DANGER SIGNS
    • SEEKING PROFESSIONAL AND MEDICAL HELP
