Basic Flow Measurements

HL CPP
INSTRUMENTATION
Types of Flow Measurements
1) Obstruction type (differential
pressure or variable area)
Ex; Flow Nozzle , Orifice , Venture Tube
2) Electromagnetic Flow Meters
3) vortex Flowmeters
4) Mass flowmeter
5) Variable area flowmeters
Primary Elements of DP Type flow
 Orifice Meters

 Venturi Meters

 Flow Nozzles
Orifice Meters

 Orifice meters are made up of stainless

steel of varying grades to create DP
 Orifice meters is very cheap as
compared to other types of flow
meters.
 Easy Installation and required 10D/5D
inlet/ out let with out bend
Venturi Meters

 It can be used for measuring flow rates of

water ,gases ,solids and slurries .
 It can be used to measure high flow rates .
 . Low pressure drop around 10% DP.
 It is used where high pressure recovery is
required.
 It is large in size and hence where space is
limited, they cannot be used .
Flow Nozzles
 It is widely used for high pressure and
temperature steam flows.
 Its used to measure the rate of flow of
Liquid or Gas steam using the
differential pressure .
 Compare with Orifice pressure drop is
less
Magnetic Flow Meters
 Magnetic flow meters works based on
Faradays law of electromagnetic
induction
 A magnetic flow meter (mag
meter, electromagnetic flow meter) is a
transducer that measures fluid flow by
the voltage induced across the liquid by
its flow through a magnetic field
 The magnetic flow meter requires a
conducting fluid only
 when the electrical conductivity of
liquids is more than 25 Micro Siemens
/cm then only we can use the MAG
Meter
 It will produce Micro volts
proportional to flow rate
Magnetic flowmeter
Vortex Flowmeters
 Works On - This sensor is
of piezoelectric crystal
 which produces a small, but
measurable, voltage pulse every time a
vortex is created
 Since the frequency of such a voltage
pulse is also proportional to the fluid
velocity,
 Velocity is proportional to flow
Mass Flow meter
 is a device that measures mass flow rate of
a fluid traveling through a tube. The mass
flow rate is the mass of the fluid traveling
past a fixed point per unit time.
 It will give direct mass reading depends on
specific gravity of fluid , Inlet temperature
and velocity of flow
 The mass flow meter does not measure the
volume per unit time (e.g., cubic meters per
second)
MASS FLOW METER
Inside Mass flow meter
Variable area flowmeters
A rotameter is an example of a variable
area meter where a weighted "float"
rises in a tapered tube as the flow rate
increases
 Floats are made in many different
shapes, with spheres and spherical
 Rotameters are available for a wide
range of liquids but are most commonly
used with water and air
Calibration of Flowmeters
 All DP flow meters can be calibrated at
Instrumentation lab , according to Data
sheet by feeding low pressure at High
Pressured Side
 MAG flow meters , Vortex , mass flow
Calibration will be done at Factory only
And it required Micro simulator to
change factory original setting , we can
change range values
