    What is Listening ??
    Listening entails receiving, attending and
    assigning meaning, assimilation and
    accommodation help in assigning meaning.
    What does listening process include ??

     SENSING

     ATTENDING
     INTERPRETING OR
    UNDERSTANDING
     EVALUATING
     RESPONDING
     REMEMBERING
    SENSING
    The listening process begins with hearing sounds and
    concentrating on them. The ability to sense sounds is
    the first determinant in the listening process.
    ATTENDING..
    The next factor is attention.
    This is mental
    concentration or the will to
    listen. The conscious
    listening process begins
    when you focus on sounds
    around you and select those
    which you choose to
    receive. This is called
    selectivity of attention.
    You have your own stimuli
    to receive some sounds.
    INTERPRETING OR
    UNDERSTANDING

    The interpretation of a sound or message depends


    on your:
     CULTURAL
     EDUCATIONAL
     SOCIAL SET UP OR
    REFERENCES
    The values, ideas, roles, needs and personal history of
    the listener may be different from that of the
    speaker.
    EVALUATING
    Good listeners are objective and unbiased. They
    apply critical thinking skills and look for facts and
    opinions. Listening ends with the step of assessing
    the worth of a sound or message.
    RESPONSE
    Giving response is a form of feed-back. It completes
    the communication cycle. It lets the speaker know
    that the message was understood.
    REMEMBERING..

    It is an integral part of the listening process. Messages are stored


    in memory in two ways:
    * Short term memory ; * Long term memory
    Memory aids are:
    * Notes taking while listening ; * Diary writing ; * Noting down
    symbols etc.
    IMPORTANCE/ BENEFITS/
    OF LISTENING
    • Although the basic purpose of listening is to
    receive information from various sources, there
    can be different purposes in listening one may
    listen to
    • To get an introductory idea of an oral message

    • To understand the main points of lecture

    • To discover the speaker’s idea during a


    conversation

    • Aim a broad understanding of the subject matter

    Listening is the most frequent activity of
    human being as well as an important event in
    the communication process. About 1\3rd of
    human communication is spent in speaking,
    writing & reading.
    It is not exaggeration to state that more than 50% of
    the working day of an executive is spent in listening
    to some one.
