Cardiovascular System
Consists of the heart, blood
vessels, and blood.
It is responsible for transporting
oxygen, nutrients, hormones,
and cellular waste products
throughout the body,
It is powered by the bodys
hardest-working organ the
heart,.
Even at rest, the average heart
easily pumps over 5 liters of
blood throughout the body
every minute
Cardiovascular System
The HEART is a muscular pumping organ located medial to the lungs
along the bodys midline in the thoracic region.
Cardiovascular Diseases
Hypertension
Or high blood pressure is defined as a sustained
elevation in mean arterial pressure.
It is NOT A SINGLE DISEASE STATE but a disorder
with many causes.
It is a MAJOR RISK FACTOR for the development
of other CVDs like coronary heart disease and
stroke.
Types of Hypertension
Primary - About 90% of all hypertensives have no
definite cause.
Secondary usually the result some other primary
diseases such as kidney disease.

In this health teaching, we will focus on PRIMARY

HYPERTENSION which is more common.
Primary Hypertension
It is also called as Idiopathic hypertension.
The exact cause is unknown, but it is attributed
to atherosclerosis.
Risk factors of Hypertension
There is no single cause for primary hypertension.
Risk factors include:
Family History
Advancing age
Race
High salt intake
Lifestyle factors:
Obesity
Excess alcohol consumption
Intake of Potassium, Calcium and Magnesium
Stress
Use of contraceptive drugs
Risk factors of Hypertension
Family History people with a positive family
history of HPN are twice at risk.
Age Older people are at greater risk for HPN.
High Salt Intake some people are more
susceptible than others to effects of increased salt
intake.
Obesity risk is 2x greater among overweight /
obese persons.
Excessive alcohol intake 10% of HPN cases are
related to alcohol consumption. Regular
consumption of 3 or more drinks per day increased
the risk of HPN.
Prevention of Hypertension
Proper Nutrition - reduce salt & fat intake
Prevent becoming overweight / obese weight
reduction through proper nutrition and exercise.
Smoking Cessation tobacco use promotes
atherosclerosis that may contribute to
hypertension.
People with risk factors should have regular
check-ups and modification of risk factors.
BP Classification
Systolic BP / Diastolic BP Category
Less than 120/80 mmHg Normal
120-139 / 80-89 mmHg Pre-Hypertension
Greater than 140/90 mmHg Hypertension
140-159 / 90-99 mmHg Hypertension Stage 1
Greater than 160/100 mmHg Hypertension Stage 2
