STRATEGIC INTERVENTION MATERIAL

PREPARED BY AZANA, JONATHAN H BSE-PHYSICAL SCIENCE EARIST STATE COLLEGE

SUBMITTED TO MS. NORA V. REYES OIC-SCIENCE DEPARTMENT

When you push against the wall, it pushes back on you. Thats why you are supported. Ask your friend why you dont topple over? How many will answer, Because the wall is pushing in you and holding you in place. Well, let gets the ball rolling to answer our questions. Please fasten your seatbelts as we go along!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi everyone,,, Im Isaac Newton, I will be your guide..Are you ready? Then lets discover new things

Newtons Third law of motion states that Whenever one object exerts a force on a second object, the second object exerts an equal and opposite force on the first objects.

In other words..In every action there is an equal and opposite reaction..that is action and reaction relationships..

THE TWO INTERACTING FORCES ARE CALLED THE ACTION FORCE AND THE REACTION FORCE.

In this lesson, we will be encountering the action and reaction relationships. You will determine and explain the relationships on these interactions. Giddiup, pull the cart so we can get going.. Lets do it. Good Luck!!!!!!!

GUIDE CARD

The activities will help and guide you in your studies. Read the directions before doing the task. Make sure to finish the activity. Keep movinggo on with the next page. You can do it!!! Be ready..123. START..

ACTIVITY CARD

EXPLORING THE WORLD OF MOTION

1. YOU GET WHAT YOU GIVE Identify what is the action and what its corresponding reaction in a given situation and illustration. 2. CAN YOU DECODE ME? Determine the words represented by the pictures to decode the hidden words or sentences. 3. HORSE SENSE Presenting the script for the HORSE CART PROBLEM, analyze the action-reaction relationships. 4. FILL ME WITH YOUR KNOWLEDGE Fill the boxes using appropriate words listed on the menu. 5. SORT ME OUT Arrange the jumble words to find the meaning of that word.

ACTIVITY CARD 1

Identify what is the action and what its corresponding reaction in a given situation and illustration.
1. While driving down the road, a firefly strikes the windshield of a bus and makes a quite obvious mess in front of the face of the driver. This is a clear case of Newton's third law of motion. The firefly hit the bus and the bus hits the firefly.

2. For years, space travel was believed to be impossible because there was nothing
that rockets could push off of in space in order to provide the propulsion necessary to accelerate. This inability of a rocket to provide propulsion is because ... a. ... space is void of air so the rockets have nothing to push off of. b. ... gravity is absent in space. c. ... space is void of air and so there is no air resistance in space. d. ... nonsense! Rockets do accelerate in space and have been able to do so for a long time.

3. Many people are familiar with the fact that a rifle recoils when fired. This recoil is the result of action-reaction force pairs. A gunpowder explosion creates hot gases that expand outward allowing the rifle to push forward on the bullet. Consistent with Newton's third law of motion, the bullet pushes backwards upon the rifle. The acceleration of the recoiling rifle is ... a. greater than the acceleration of the bullet. b. smaller than the acceleration of the bullet .c. the same size as the acceleration of the bullet.

4. In the top picture (below), Kent Budgett is pulling upon a rope that is attached to a wall. In the bottom picture, the Kent is pulling upon a rope that is attached to an elephant. In each case, the force scale reads 500 Newton. Kent is pulling ...

a. with more force when the rope is attached to the wall. b. with more force when the rope is attached to the elephant. c. the same force in each case.

ACTIVITY CARD 2

CAN YOU DECODE ME?

Your goal on this activity is to write the letters that is represented by the pictures to complete the statement.good luck!!!!

there is an

Presenting the script for the HORSE CART PROBLEM, analyze the action-reaction relationships.

The Horse & Wagon Problem

Farmer Brown hitches Old Dobbin to his wagon one day, then says, "OK, Old Dobbin, let's go!" Old Dobbin turns to Farmer Brown and says, "Do you remember back in high school, when we took Physics together?" "Yes, I do. We were lab partners in that class, and we had a lot of fun." says Farmer Brown. "Ah, yes! Those were the good old days, all right!", says Old Dobbin, "You do remember Newton's Three Laws, of course, which tell how all objects move?"

"Yes, I do! I remember that Newton's Laws of Motion are the cornerstone of mechanics. Now, let's get this wagon moving!" "Do you remember how Newton's Third Law says that every action force has an equal and opposite reaction force?", says Old Dobbin, ignoring Farmer Brown's impatience. "Yes, I do." says Farmer Brown, sensing trouble. "Newton's Third Law says that if I pull on the wagon, the wagon exerts an equal and opposite force on me. Don't you agree?", asks Old Dobbin. "Yes... but..." "If these two forces are equal and opposite, they will cancel, so that the net force is zero, right?", argues Dobbin. "Well, I suppose so," stammers Farmer Brown. "The net force is always the important thing. If the net force is zero, then Newton's Second Law (and Newton's First Law, too) says that the acceleration of the wagon must be zero." "Yes, I remember Newton's Second Law very well, Old Dobbin.", says Farmer Brown, hopefully. "This physics discussion is certainly interesting, but let's get going!" "But that's the point!", objects Old Dobbin, "If the wagon's pull is always equal and opposite of my pull, then the net force will always be zero, so the wagon can never move! Since it is at rest, it must always remain at rest! Get over here and unhitch me, since I have just proven that Newton's Laws say that it is impossible for a horse to pull a wagon!" At this point, Farmer Brown throws up his hands in dismay and turns to you. "Please help me!" he says, "I really should have paid more attention in physics class! I know that Newton's Laws are correct, and I know that horses really can pull wagons. There has to be an error in Old Dobbin's argument, but what is it? How can I convince Old Dobbin that if he pulls on the wagon, it will move?"
