Introduction on NSS:
The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a central-sector scheme under the Ministry of
Youth
Affairs and Sports, Government of India. It was launched in 1969, marking the birth
centenary
of Mahatma Gandhi, with the primary aim of fostering the spirit of social service and
community engagement among students.
The motto of NSS is "Not Me, But You", reflecting the essence of democratic living and
selfless service. It encourages students to develop a sense of responsibility, discipline, and a
commitment to the betterment of society.
Objectives of NSS:
1. Personality Development: Encourage students to acquire leadership qualities,
discipline,

3. Social Awareness: Promote awareness of social issues and the importance of
4. contributing to nation-building.
5. Skill Development: Equip volunteers with skills to address challenges in rural and
urban
areas.

Activities under NSS:
• Community Service: Organizing blood donation camps, health camps, and literacy
drives.
• Environment Protection: Tree plantation drives, awareness campaigns on
environmental conservation.
• Disaster Management: Assisting in relief and rehabilitation during natural disasters.
• Cultural Exchange: Promoting cultural understanding and unity through local and
national programs.
• Special Camps: Conducting week-long residential camps in villages for intensive
community service.
WASTE MANAGEMENT
Types of Waste
1. Biodegradable Waste
o Waste that decomposes naturally, such as food scraps, leaves, and agricultural
residues.
o Examples: Vegetable peels, garden waste, and paper products.
2. Non-Biodegradable Waste
o Materials that do not decompose easily and persist in the environment for a long
time.
o Examples: Plastics, metals, glass, and styrofoam.
3. Hazardous Waste
o Waste that poses a threat to health or the environment due to its toxic, corrosive,
or flammable properties.
o Examples: Chemicals, paints, batteries, and medical waste.
4. E-Waste (Electronic Waste)
o Discarded electronic devices and components that require special handling and
recycling.
o Examples: Old computers, smartphones, printers, and household appliances.
5. Industrial Waste
o By-products from manufacturing processes, often containing harmful chemicals
or heavy metals.
o Examples: Slag, chemical residues, and ash.
TYPES:
1. Renewable Energy
• Importance of solar, wind, and hydro energy in reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
• Promoting the use of renewable energy sources in rural and urban areas.
• Organizing awareness campaigns on installing solar panels or biogas plants.
2. Water Conservation
• Importance of saving water and preventing water wastage.
• Techniques like rainwater harvesting, greywater recycling, and drip irrigation.
• Organizing campaigns and workshops on water-saving practices.
4. Tree Plantation
• Benefits of afforestation and combating deforestation.
• Conducting tree plantation drives in schools, colleges, and public spaces.
• Raising awareness about the importance of biodiversity conservation.
5. Digital Literacy
• Bridging the digital divide by teaching basic computer and internet skills to rural
communities.
• Educating people about online safety and the benefits of e-governance services.
• Helping students and elderly citizens use technology effectively.
6. Road Safety
• Importance of following traffic rules and wearing helmets or seatbelts.
