Speaking Part 1

Let me answer most common questions regarding Speaking Part 1:

How long should my answers be?

The truth is there is no standard for the number of sentences. Answer the question fully.
Give a direct answer to the question and make sure to give reasons or add details.

See the examples below to compare.

Too Short:

● "Yes, I like cooking."

This doesn’t give enough information. It answers the question but doesn’t expand on the
idea.

Too Long:

● "Yes, I enjoy cooking very much because I find it really relaxing after a long day
of work. I like trying out recipes from different countries, especially Italian and
Japanese cuisine. Last weekend, I spent the entire day preparing a four-course
meal for my friends, and it was such a fun experience because I got to try new
ingredients. In fact, I’m planning to cook something new this weekend as well."

While detailed, this answer would be more appropriate for a Part 2 response or might
cause time management issues in Part 1.

Ideal Length (kind of, there's nothing perfect in this world):

● "Yes, I really enjoy cooking. It helps me relax, and I love experimenting with new
recipes. I usually cook a few times a week, especially when I have time on the
weekends."

This answer is a good length because it answers the question directly, adds a reason,
and gives some extra details, but without going overboard.
Another example of answering the question "Do you like watching movies?"

Too Long:

● "Yes, I absolutely love watching movies. I’ve been a fan of films since I was a
child, and I try to watch as many different genres as possible. I prefer comedies,
but I also enjoy action and drama movies, especially those from foreign
countries. I even like going to film festivals sometimes, although it can be hard to
find time because of my busy schedule. In fact, I plan to see a movie this
weekend with my friends."

Too Short:

● Yes, I like movies. I watch movies every week

Ideal Length:

● "Yes, I love watching movies, especially comedies. I try to watch one or two
every week, usually on the weekends when I have more free time."

One final example, "Do you prefer to spend time indoors or outdoors?"

Too Short:

● "I prefer outdoors."

Too Long:

● "I definitely prefer spending time outdoors. I’ve always been a fan of nature, and I
try to go hiking or cycling whenever I can. On weekends, I often visit nearby
parks or nature reserves. One time, I even went on a week-long camping trip with
my friends, which was an amazing experience. I think being outdoors is good for
both physical and mental health, and I try to do it as much as possible."

Ideal Length:

● "I prefer spending time outdoors because I enjoy nature. I usually go hiking or
cycling when the weather is nice, which helps me stay active. With that said, I
might sometimes play chess or board games with my friends, especially if its
raining"
Can I give negative answers or say "I don't know"?
Yes, you can. Give genuine answers. There's no need to lie. What's really important is
to explain your answer anyway.

What kinds of flowers are popular in your country?

—To be honest, I would struggle to answer this question even in my first language. You
see I have never really taken interest in plants and flowers. I know roses and tulips, but
I'm sure there are other flowers that are popular too. I just don't know about them

Is fishing popular in your country?

— Uhm, you got me there. I really don't know anything about fishing. Like I know that
we have Caspian sea and many big and small lakes and rivers, but I genuinely don't
know if fishing is popular. At least no one in my immediate circle has been keen on it.

— Do you do exercises often?

— No, not really. I don't do exercises at all these days. I'm at work all day and I get so
tired at the end of the day that I have no energy to do anything, let alone hitting the gym.
But maybe I will take up some sports in the future, when I have more free time, who
knows?

— Do you often go to the library?

– Uhm, you know, honestly, I don't go to libraries. As a matter of fact, I can't even think
of the last time when I went to a library. This is maybe because I don't read books and if
I need to find information I can use the Internet… you know… we can find almost
anything online these days… sooo, actually, I don't know why we need libraries in the
first place.

Here you need to use Present Perfect tense.

Have you ever thought about starting your own business?

"Yes, I’ve thought about it quite a few times. I’d love to open a small café one day
because I really enjoy creating unique dishes and providing a cozy atmosphere for
people to relax."

Have you ever lost your keys?

time it happened, I had to call a locksmith to help me get into my apartment."

"Yes, I’ve tried skydiving once, and it was one of the most thrilling experiences of my
life. Jumping out of a plane was terrifying, but the adrenaline rush was incredible!"

school, where we learned about different constellations and the planets. It was really
interesting!"

Have you ever forgotten something that was important?

"Yes, unfortunately! I once forgot my best friend’s birthday, which was really
embarrassing. I made up for it by throwing her a surprise party a week later."
If negative:
Have you ever thought about starting your own business?
"No, I’ve never really thought about starting my own business. I prefer the stability of
working for a company, and I don’t think I’d enjoy the risks that come with running a
business."

Have you ever lost your keys?

" No, that has never happened. We have a smart security system at
home and we don't need keys. I can use my fingerprint or face ID to access our house.
That's why
I have never actually even had any keys let alone lose them."

something that really interested me, though I know it fascinates a lot of people."

Have you ever forgotten something that was important?

"No, I can’t recall ever forgetting something really important. I try to stay organized
and make lists so that I don’t miss anything significant."

6. About childhood
Make sure to paraphrase the question:

As a child:
= in my childhood
= when I was a child
= when I was a kid
= when I was younger

Questions about childhood require using past tenses.

It's also a perfect opportunity to use used to & would.

These modal verbs can often be used interchangeably, but there are still nuances:
used to = can be used for repeated actions and states
would = can be used only for active verbs

I used to love watching Turkish tv shows with my grandmother when I was a kid, but
now I find them very weird and too predictable. I don't know, maybe it's just because I
grew out of such shows or because my grandmother is no longer with us. I guess it's the
second one…

Here, I would love watching Turkish tv shows – would be incorrect.

State verbs include: love, feel, know, understand, see, be

What did you often do with your friends in your childhood?

"I used to ride bikes with my friends after school almost every day. We would spend
hours exploring the neighborhood, finding new places to play, or just racing each other
for fun. It was such a carefree time, and we never worried about getting lost."

Is there an advertisement that made an impression on you when you were a

child?
"Yes, there used to be a really catchy ad for a toy robot that I loved. I would always
beg my parents to buy it for me whenever it came on TV. The jingle was so memorable
that even now, I can still hum it. It definitely left a lasting impression on me."

Did your parents teach you to share when you were a child?
"Yes, my parents used to be very strict about sharing. They would always remind me
and my siblings to take turns with our toys, especially if we started arguing. I remember
my dad would step in whenever things got heated and make sure we all played fairly.
Looking back, it was a good lesson."

Did you go to the library when you were a kid?

"Yes, I used to go to the library every weekend with my dad. It was something we
looked forward to, and we would spend hours browsing through the shelves. I’d
always pick out adventure books, while he would look for something more serious. It
became a nice routine for us."

Did you stay up late when you were a kid?

"No, not really. I used to have a strict bedtime, and my parents would always make
sure I was in bed by 9 p.m. If I ever tried to stay up late to watch TV, they would
quickly send me off to bed. It wasn’t until I was a teenager that I could stay up a bit
later."
7. Would you (like to)... ?
So this type of questions might seem "easy" and straightforward.

Most students would just respond with "Yes, I would" or "No, I wouldn't"

While it is perfectly acceptable to start your answer with a short Yes\No direct answer,
you can use these type of questions to your benefit. Use more interesting language to
demonstrate high level of grammar and coherence.

Second Conditional

This is perfect for hypothetical situations that are unlikely or imaginary.

● Structure:
If + past simple, would + verb
● Example:
Would you like to live in another country?
"If I had the chance, I would definitely love to live in another country.
Experiencing a new culture and lifestyle would be incredibly enriching."

Mixed Conditionals

Use this structure to express an unreal past event with present consequences.

● Structure:
If + past perfect, would + verb (present result)
● Example:
Would you like to have studied something different?
"If I had studied art instead of engineering, I would probably be a designer now.
However, I don’t regret my choice."

Wish Clauses

Use these to express desires or hypothetical situations.

● Example:
Would you like to live near the sea?
"I wish I could live near the sea! The peaceful environment and fresh air would be
wonderful, but unfortunately, it’s not feasible for me right now."

Inversion for Emphasis [for band 7.0+ candidates]

(PLEASE DO NOT TRY THIS IF YOU ARE BAND 6.0 or BELOW LEVEL)

This structure adds formality and sophistication.

● Structure:
Were I to + verb, I would...
● Example:
Would you like to change your job?
"Were I to change my job, it would have to be for something much more exciting
and fulfilling. Right now, I’m quite content, though."

"Supposing" or "Imagine" for Hypothetical Situations

These are great to use in informal but advanced responses.

● Example:
Would you like to live in a different city?
"Supposing I had no ties here, I’d move to a bustling city like New York in a
heartbeat. The energy there is just contagious."

● Imagine I won the scholarship at Seoul National University, I'd leave my city in a
heartbeat, you better believe that.

8. Future
Aside from typical grammar for future, such as "will" or "be going to", you can use
these:
1. Modal verbs for speculations: may, might, can
2. Collocations: set to, on the verge of, bound to, about to, be likely\unlikely

bound to\ set to = certainly will happen or is inevitable

about to\ on the verge of = it will happen soon

Do you think paper books will disappear in the future?

"It’s unlikely that paper books will completely disappear, although digital reading is
becoming more prevalent. I think they might become more of a niche product, reserved
for collectors or those who simply prefer the feel of a physical book. We’re probably on
the verge of a time when they’ll coexist with digital formats, rather than replace them."

Will you read more online in the future?

"I think I’m bound to read more online in the future. With digital content becoming so
accessible, it’s likely that most of my reading will shift to e-books and online articles.
However, I don’t believe I’ll completely stop reading paper books."

What do you think will make you feel happy in the future?
"I hope to find happiness through a balance of career success and personal fulfillment.
I’m likely to feel happy if I achieve my professional goals while maintaining strong
relationships with my family and friends. Also, small things like traveling more often and
pursuing hobbies will likely contribute to my happiness."

Will you buy a new one (mobile phone) in the future?

"I’m set to buy a new phone in a few months when my current contract expires. By that
time, I’ll probably go for something that has better battery life and a more powerful
camera. However, I’m not someone who upgrades my phone frequently, so I’ll only
change it if I really need to."

*Add perhaps, probably, maybe etc. if you are not certain about some future actions or
events.

Is breakfast important?
"Absolutely, breakfast is incredibly important. It sets the tone for the day and provides
the energy needed to stay focused and productive. Skipping breakfast can really affect
my mood and concentration, so I always make an effort to eat something in the
morning."

Are you good at math?

"Not really, I wouldn’t say I’m good at math at all. I’ve always struggled with numbers,
and while I can manage basic calculations, anything more complex tends to confuse
me. I much prefer subjects that involve creativity over those that are heavily
math-focused."

Are you interested in news?

"Certainly! I’m quite interested in news, especially current events and global affairs. I
believe it’s important to stay informed about what’s happening around the world, as it
helps me understand different perspectives and engage in meaningful conversations."

Will you read more online in the future?

"I think I definitely will read more online in the future. With the convenience of digital
platforms, it’s just so easy to access a variety of articles and books. However, I also
hope to maintain a balance and continue enjoying physical books as well."

Is there good public transportation in your hometown?

"Not at all. Unfortunately, the public transportation system in my hometown is quite
lacking. The buses are infrequent and often unreliable, making it difficult to get around
without a car. Many people, including myself, rely on personal vehicles instead."
