Special to The Sun
Jason Garstkiewicz, a seventh-grade Haddonfield Middle School student, was diagnosed with bone cancer shortly before Christmas. Jasons
family and several local organizations are coming together to help sell neon athletic shoelaces to Haddonfield residents. Here, the members
of his lacrosse team show off the neon laces.
Borough
mourns
passing of
volunteer
By ROBERT LINNEHAN
The Haddonfield Sun
For more than six decades,
Parker Griffeth, 85, had
stopped into the firehouse he
loved so much almost every
single day to make sure every-
thing was running smoothly
or to share a kind word with
one of his fellow volunteers,
Haddon Fire Company No. 1
Chief Joe Riggs said.
Unfortunately, the volun-
teers Griffeth worked side by
side with for more than 65-
years wont see his face pop
into the department anymore.
The longest serving volun-
teer of the fire company died
on Saturday, Jan. 28. The fire
company and borough com-
missioners had recently hon-
ored him for his six decades of
service to Haddonfield, declar-
ing Saturday, Jan. 7 as Parker
G. Griffeth 65th Year Volunteer
Firefighter Day.
His commitment was ex-
ceptional as a volunteer. Not
only did he respond to calls for
65 years, but he was also very
active on the administrative
side of the department. He
was the secretary to the fire-
mans relief association and
he was the trustee to the fire
company. It wasnt all about re-
sponding to the fires, but his
commitment was to the organ-
ization as much as it was
about being a volunteer,
Teams lacing up for fundraiser
If youre attending a sporting
event in Haddonfield and the par-
ticipants are all wearing brightly
colored yellow shoelaces, youll
know what it means.
Haddonfield sports teams and
other teams throughout the coun-
ty are joining in support of a
local family and their, son, Jason
Garstkiewicz, a seventh-grade
Haddonfield Middle School stu-
dent, who was diagnosed with
bone cancer shortly before
Christmas.
An avid sports enthusiast and
athlete, Garstkiewicz plays bas-
ketball, football and lacrosse, so
when he was first diagnosed, a
group of parents from his sev-
enth-grade lacrosse team reached
out to Go4theGoal Foundation to
order a few hundred neon yellow
shoelaces to distribute to kids
around town to show both sup-
port for him and his family and to
raise awareness about pediatric
cancer in the community.
Based in Merchantville, the
Go4theGoal Foundation is a 501
(c) 3 non-profit charitable organi-
zation founded in 2006 by Dr.
Richard and Beth Stefanacci,
soon after their oldest child was
diagnosed with Ewings Sarcoma,
a rare form of bone cancer.

found on file with the Haddon-
field Police Department:
A motorist observed a male rid-
ing a red bicycle on Meadow
Drive on Feb. 1 on 2:07 p.m. The
bicycle was his and he stopped
the suspect on the bike, who then
took off and walked away on
Coles Mill Road. An officer
stopped the suspect and he was
positively identified.
The bike was valued at $700. He
was transported to Camden

his bail set at $2,500.
A W. Cottage Avenue resident

her account was put on hold.
A Loucroft Road resident re-
ported to police on Jan. 28 at 10:07
p.m. that she and her husband re-
turned home and saw that her
home had been broken into. The
suspects had gained entry into
the house by forcing the door
open and then unlocked the dead-
bolt.
The resident said that the mas-
ter bedroom had been ransacked.
Her dresser drawers, clothing,
and jewelry had been strewn
throughout the room.
No neighbors could give any in-
formation on the break-in.

The 2012 Commemorative Tree
Donation Program is underway.
This years available locations
are on Tanner Street, at 9 Tanner
St. (the tree well closest to Kings
Highway); 9 Tanner St. (the tree
well further from Kings High-
way); 12 Tanner St. and 23 Tanner
St.
The plantings will take place
this spring which is best for
trees.
By planting a tree in honor of a
special event or a special person,
you can provide a remembrance
that is important to you, your
family and your community. The
Borough of Haddonfield is
pleased to work with individuals
interested in giving a dedicated
tree.
A $1,000 minimum donation is
requested to establish a dedicated
tree.
This covers the cost of acquir-
ing the tree and the commemora-
tive plaque as well as planting
and maintenance cost. Tree types
and planting sites will be selected
by the Haddonfield Shade
Tree Commission in consultation
with the department of public
works.
This ensures the sites are ap-
propriate to support the tree, are
in locations where plantings are
needed and that the tree species
are consistent with the street
trees planted successfully
throughout the borough.
Donors may request an en-
graved brass plaque through the
shade tree commission, to be
placed near the dedicated tree.

and an application form, visit the
borough website at www.haddon

The foundation created Lace-
Up 4 Pediatric Cancer, a pro-
gram that provides brightly col-
ored shoelaces to local sports
teams to show their support for a
cancer patient in their communi-
ty.
After Garstkiewicz was diag-
nosed with cancer, the group pro-
vided the lacrosse team with
about 300 pairs of the laces.
Within hours, we had orders
for almost 1,000 laces, and Lace-
Up and Help Kick Pediatric Can-
cer was born, said Jean-Anne
McMahon, a Haddonfield resi-
dent and friend of Jasons family.
Due to the overwhelming de-
mand, we ordered an additional
3,000 laces.
Pam Garstkiewicz, mother of
Jason and speaking on behalf of
the family, said Jason was diag-
nosed with cancer the day after
his 13th birthday. He complained
of a painful ankle, which the fam-
ily thought was a stress fracture.
It ended up being a tumor, she
said.
Suffice it to say, this shattered
our family. In the days and weeks
since Jasons diagnosis we have
come to see the love, caring and
generosity of family and friends.
The Lace-Up 4 Pediatric Cancer
initiative is just one of many self-
less offerings our family has re-
ceived from the community. The
outpouring of support for this
fundraiser has been overwhelm-
ing, she wrote in a statement.
Sports are Jasons passion. To
see the teams joined together
wearing the neon yellow laces to
honor Jason gives all of us added
strength to face head on this dis-
ease and win. Jason is looking
ahead to the day he laces up his
shoes and joins his team on the
field or court. One way or another
he will be back and enjoying the
sports he loves!
The Haddonfield Memorial
High School varsity basketball
teams and the Haddonfield Mid-
dle School basketball teams are
already wearing the laces.
Go4theGoals neon yellow
shoelaces will be on sale for $3 per
pair at Haddonfields three ele-
mentary schools and Middle
School today. Laces will also be
available for sale the weekend of
Feb. 10 to 12 at several town sports
events and at many Haddonfield
retailers, including Haddonfield
Running Company and HerSport.
Proceeds will benefit both Jason
and his family and the Go4the-
Goal Foundation. The laces are
also on sale at the Go4TheGoal
Foundation website at
www.go4thegoal.org/ shop.

R
ecent news that Atlantic City
casinos had a better December
2011 than December 2010 is, of
course, good to hear. Given the citys
long losing streak, any step in the
right direction, no matter the reason,
is cause to pat someone on the back.
But, a closer look at the numbers
shows that the city is not anywhere
close to being out of the woods.
The state Division of Gaming En-
forcement recently announced that
total casino win rose 4.2 percent last
December to $246.5 million. It was the
highest monthly percentage increase
since December 2006, officials said.
Thats great, except for the fact that,
first, in December 2010, Old Man Win-
ter already had settled in for what was
to be a brutal stay. Last December, the
weather was great. That, alone, proba-
bly helped the casinos quite a bit.
Oh, and the state also announced
that, for the year, casinos won $3.3 bil-
lion, which is down 6.9 percent from
2010.
But we really dont feel like raining
on ACs parade today. A win is a win is
a win, and well take it.
And there are other reasons for
hope:
The Revel is set to open this sum-
mer. No doubt it will generate a fair
amount of buzz that will attract visi-
tors and create thousands of jobs.
And, John Palmieri is the new exec-
utive director of the Casino Reinvest-
ment Development Authority. He has a
history of success in helping commu-
nities expand. If he can get the city,
the casinos and the various other enti-
ties on board in marketing the city as
a destination point for tourists, some-
thing really good could happen.
The state also is looking into online
gambling, which actually could help
casinos in the long run.
Atlantic City still has a long, diffi-
cult road to recovery. But Decembers
news was good, and there are other,
positive signs.
Maybe theres hope for the city after
all.
Small win is better than a loss
At this point, Atlantic City will cling to any scrap of good news
AC notches a win
There are a few reasons why
Decembers casino win numbers are
up. Not all point to a rapid recovery
for Atlantic City, but, at this point, a
win is a win.
Writer grateful for
Haddonfields great services
T'is the season to be grateful.
For me, it was time to remember how
Haddonfield offers extraordinary services
of all kinds, which I received a dramatic re-
minder of this past year.
In August I fell and broke my wrist and
knee.
Looking at bees and birds and a beauti-
ful blue sky, I suddenly and swiftly was flat
on the blacktop. With an instant need of an
orthopedic surgeon, and my computer on
the blink, I phoned the Haddonfield Public
Library.
I explained to reference librarian Jo-
Ann Pure my emergency and asked her to
provide me with names of orthopedic
surgeons in Haddonfield. I live in Haddon-
field and wanted an office close to my
house.
Quickly, she searched the Internet and
provided surgeons and office locations and
even helped figure out directions from my
house.
From the list, I picked Dr. Kevin Roen-
beck of Orthopedic & Neurological Spe-
cialists, Haddonfield.
Roenbeck not only is a surgeon special-
ist but completed a fellowship in hand
surgery at a major university medical cen-
ter.
Within a few hours, I had an appoint-
ment with Roenbeck, located within walk-
ing distance of my house (once I can walk
again), specializing in hands, and with
skill comparable to a surgeon in any world-
class medical center.
Within a week, my wrist was operated
on successfully.
My wrist is now healed enough for me to
type this email and share my appreciation
for living in such a town.
Sometimes, I think we all live such busy
lives, we overlook the positive.
- Marjorie L. Hill

Riggs said. He stopped in the sta-
tion almost everyday, usually
around lunchtime, to say hello to
the guys and to verify that every-
thing was going well. He was al-
ways there to lend a thought or a
helping hand around the station.
He was born in Haddonfield in
1926, married the love of his life,
Mary, had three children and six
grandchildren, according to those
who knew him. Staff Sergeant
Griffeth served in the U.S. Army
during World War II in the Philip-
pines and Germany, and was a
member of American Legion
Post No. 38 of Haddonfield.
Griffeth joined the company in
May 1947. Parkers father and his
uncle, Russ, were the assistant
chief and chief of the company
when he joined.
Parker joined the company not
from pressure from his father or
uncle, but just from being around
the firehouse.
Griffeth had worked with his
son, David, at the station since
1975. He also worked with his
grandson, Bryan, for only six
months before Bryans unfortu-
nate death in December 2009.
You get an empty feeling
when youre used to seeing a guy
every single day. He was at the
station for 65 years; by todays
standards. its hard to get 65
months. They have so many com-
mitments, so 65 months is a great
hurdle, Riggs said. We celebrate
five years in membership, and 65
years is outstanding. Its such an
extreme. Im sure I wont live to
see that award given out again. I
would be thrilled, but I would be
surprised if we ever honored
someone for 65 years. He was
great.
The second-generation owner
of Griffeth Electric Company,
Parker operated his business in
downtown Haddonfield. Butch
Brees, a fellow firefighters, said
Griffeth was a fixture in the
business life of Haddonfield, a
consummate gentleman and
friend to all who knew him.
He was an integral member of
the first Haddonfield Business
Association and helped initiate
the first light pole decorations
along Kings Highway, starting
from Candy Canes to the present
day wreaths. He was called upon
many times to help out with,
what else, electrical problems.
Over many years, Griffeth Elec-
tric sponsored Haddonfield Little
League teams in all levels of
play, Brees wrote in a statement
about Griffeth.
Parker was a Master Mason of
the Rising Sun Lodge No. 15 of
Free and Accepted Masons in
Haddonfield. He also served the
Borough of Haddonfield as a
member of the Planning Board,
which later expanded to include a
Zoning Board, Brees said.
