Read the text carefully, and do the activities.

From advancements and discoveries in numbers, optics, and even coffee, to the establishment of
universities and hospitals, Muslim scientists played an important role in shaping the world during the Middle
Ages. Their dedication and talent led to the discovery of concepts and technologies that continue to
influence our lives today. For example, Jabir Ibn Hayyan made significant contributions in chemistry, Al-
Jazari excelled in hydraulics, Ibn Al-Haytham advanced optics, and Abbas ibn Firnas pioneered in aviation.

It's crucial to recognize that these scholars were not only driven by a thirst for knowledge but also by their
religious beliefs. The Islamic Golden Age saw Muslim scientists, researchers, and inventors making
profound impacts across various fields. In mathematics, for instance, Algebra, a fundamental component of
modern technology and engineering, was popularized by the renowned Persian scientist Al-Khwarizmi in his
work "The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing."

One lesser-known fact is that the first formal university was established during Islam's Golden Age by a
Muslim princess named Fatima Al-Fihria in 859 AD in Fez. Similarly, the Ahmad Ibn Tulun Hospital,
founded in Egypt in the 9th century, was among the world's first functional hospitals, setting a standard for
healthcare facilities today.

These examples highlight the significant contributions of Muslim inventors and scholars. Many everyday
items, we take for granted, are the results of their innovative work. While the vast Islamic Empire may have
faded into history, the legacies of Muslim scholars continue to inspire our world to this day.
