The Islamic Golden Age
The Islamic Golden Age was a period of scientific, economic and cultural flourishing in the history of
Islam. It traditionally dated from the 8th century to the 13th century. During this period, Islamic culture placed
high importance on education by establishing the first public universities in Baghdad.
This period begun during the reign of the Abbasid caliph Harun al-Rashid with the inauguration of Bayt
al-Hikmah or the House of Wisdom in Baghdad where intellectuals with different cultural backgrounds
gathered to translate all of the world’s classical knowledge into the Arabic language. Another common feature
during the Islamic Golden Age was the large number of Muslim polymath scholars who were known as
“Hakeems” each of whom contributed to a variety of different fields..
Amomg famous scholars linked with the House of Wisdom are Al-Khwarizm Al- Kindi ,Ibn Sina,
Al-Battani and others. These scientists bestowed the world countless inventions including hospitals,
universities, surgical instruments, camera obscura, coffee, soap bar, shampoo, mechanized water clocks, three-
course meal, carpets.
