John Henry Schwarz

John Henry Schwarz (/ʃwɔːrts/ SHWORTS; born

November 22, 1941) is an American theoretical John Henry Schwarz
physicist.[5] Along with Yoichiro Nambu, Holger Bech Born November 22, 1941
Nielsen, Joël Scherk, Gabriele Veneziano, Michael North Adams, Massachusetts,
Green, and Leonard Susskind, he is regarded as one of U.S.
the founders of string theory. Alma mater Harvard University (BA)
University of California,
Berkeley (PhD)
Early life and education Known for Lorentz-covariant description of
superstrings[1]
He studied mathematics at Harvard College (A.B., Classification of the consistent
1962) and theoretical physics at the University of ten-dimensional superstring
California at Berkeley (Ph.D., 1966), where his theories[2]
graduate advisor was Geoffrey Chew. For several years Green–Schwarz mechanism
he was one of the very few physicists who pursued RNS formalism
string theory as a viable theory of quantum gravity. GS formalism
Neveu–Schwarz algebra
His work with Michael Green on anomaly cancellation
Neveu–Schwarz B-field
in Type I string theories led to the so-called "first
Scherk–Schwarz mechanism
superstring revolution" of 1984, which greatly
Discovering the D = 10 critical
contributed to moving string theory into the
dimension of superstring
mainstream of research in theoretical physics.[6] theory[3]
Type II string theory[4]
Schwarz was an assistant professor at Princeton
Type IIB supergravity
University from 1966 to 1972. He then moved to the
California Institute of Technology (Caltech), where he Scientific career
is currently the Harold Brown Professor of Theoretical Fields Theoretical physics
Physics.[7] Institutions Princeton University
California Institute of
Technology
Awards Doctoral Geoffrey Chew
advisor
He was elected a member of the National Academy of
Sciences and a Fellow of the American Physical Doctoral Mina Aganagic
Society (1986).[8] He was a fellow of the MacArthur students Anthony Ichiro Sanda
Foundation in 1987. Cosmas Zachos

Michael R. Douglas
Gerald B. Cleaver
He received the Dirac Medal of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in 1989, and the Dannie
Heineman Prize for Mathematical Physics of the American Physical Society in 2002. On December 12,
2013, he shared the Fundamental Physics Prize with Michael Green "for opening new perspectives on
quantum gravity and the unification of forces."
