Introduction

The Philippines is located along the typhoon belt of the Pacific Ocean which results in an

average of 20 tropical cyclones (typhoons) per year. Thus, these typhoons occur at their

peak–making up 70% of the average typhoons– every July to October. Making the Philippines

known as a “Typhoon-prone” country. Furthermore, many architects and engineers in other

countries had their studies about creating a typhoon-resilient structure that ensures minimal

damage during strong typhoons and strong winds; However, not all of those proposed structures

were suitable for the Philippines. There are housing authorities and villages here in the

Philippines that use American-style homes, assuming that these types of structural design can

withstand the Philippines' climate, however, further innovations are needed to create a

typhoon-resilient home suited for the Filipino people.

In La Union, a province in the Ilocos Region of the Philippines, the place experienced several

significant typhoons over the years, leading to substantial damage to its infrastructure.

Furthermore, many families lose their homes because of the typhoons that pass through. One of

the typhoons that plagued La Union is Typhoon Maring in the year 2021. This severe tropical

storm Maring brought heavy rains and strong winds, causing widespread flooding. It affected

259 barangays, 38,812 families, and 135,881 individuals. Infrastructure damage was estimated at

₱63 million. This typhoon destroyed many houses that could not withstand the typhoon.

Thus, we concluded that the houses in this area need to be changed and improved to prevent the

destruction or exhaustion of the homes of those who live here. That will also make the Filipinos

save more money from constantly reconstructing their home due to calamities. This prototype

will show a not-so-new type of establishment that will be created with modern and traditional

materials along with modern innovation, and will ensure resilience against strong winds and

super typhoons in the Philippines.

History

Hexagons have become a popular and adaptable trend in interior design, captivating designers

with their unique geometric appeal. These shapes bring a modern, stylish touch to various

elements, from floors and walls to furniture and décor. Hexagons can transform a space into a

visually engaging and artistic environment, whether used in uniform patterns or bold

combinations. Their versatility complements a wide range of styles and color schemes, making

them a key feature in contemporary and sophisticated interiors.

Historically significant, the six-sided hexagon has been incorporated into design from the Middle

Ages to today, often holding religious and cultural meanings.

In 2016, the Architects for Society completed the most current construction of the hexagonal

house. They claim that the Hex House is a rapidly deployable shelter that provides an

“affordable, dignified, and comfortable space.” It was designed to be used for both long-term

occupancy and emergency shelters. Furthermore, in the case of a disaster, the units' thermal

efficiency may be improved by their proximity to one another and the hexagonal shape of the

home. With typical housing facilities, this type of house-shaped design is a flexible choice that

non-builders may swiftly and simply create while keeping a decent appearance.

According to studies, Hex House prototype for a rapidly deployable dwelling that could house

victims of catastrophic events. This house can equally distribute forces, making it more resistant

to natural disasters like earthquakes and strong winds that may easily ruin the establishment in

one strike.

Polygonal-shaped houses such as hexagonal houses were popularized by Orson S. Fowler’s ‘A

Home for All’ or the ‘Gravel Wall Mode of Building’ (1853). These polygonal-shaped houses

were considered more practical, economical, and healthful for everyone. Hexagons' geometric

qualities make them significant forms in terms of practicality. Because of their stability,

efficiency, and appearance of honeycombs, hexagonal shapes are common in the environment.

Similarly, a hexagonal home design can be sound and stable and withstand and survive excessive
wind and land tremors. Economic construction of hexagonal houses eliminates unnecessary

vacant areas and uses more resources efficiently, thus reducing material cost and environmental

degradation.

Objectives

The objective of this analysis is to determine and prove if a hexagon house will be able to

withstand heavy rainfalls and strong winds in the Philippines caused by typhoons.

This analysis aims to:

a.) Establish a secure and safe living space that can accommodate 4-6 member-family;

b.) Develop a structure that offers resiliency against multiple typhoons or hurricanes, ensuring

long-term safety and functionality; and

c.) Ensure that the structure lasts for a reasonable period; a building with materials and

construction methods that emphasize longevity and the capacity to survive harsh weather without

the need for regular reinforcement or repairs after each storm.
