CUBOID
HOUSE
LOCATION: ALBAY, BICOL

"from homes made of resilient indigenous materials such as

bamboo to an eco-bricks tiny house, a space-saving, eco-
friendly home, to a remodeled jeepney campervan."

aims to provide sustainable housing units for Bicolanos,

as well as other Filipinos who are in need of typhoon-
proof housing.

CUBOID
HOUSE
LOCATION: ALBAY, BICOL

CONCEPT AND FEATURE:

Curves of the walls - reduce aerodynamic forces.
Resilient indigenous materials - bamboo (eco-
bricks)
Construction - 2 to 3 months (build off-site)
Price - PHP 1.8 Million

Removing of Gutter:
Removing the Gutter from the roof reduces the
gutter from the roof reduces the pressure from
strong winds during typhoons.
Curved Walls:
Due to the Curved walls the magnitude of the
vortices brought by the typhoon is lessened and
thereby reducing the aerodynamic forces.

STYROFOAM
HOUSE
LOCATION: MINAMIASO, JAPAN
When hearing the word “Styrofoam”, most people think about
disposable food containers or packaging material, but for Japan, it is
the building material of the future. Styrofoam dome houses are
highly typhoon and earthquake resistant, super cheap and quick to
build, and have a very high thermal insulating property.

It aims to provide a less expensive building method

that is also a sustainable option for the
environment, sanitation, and lower sound emission,
as well as the ability to apply heat insulation that is
beneficial to the Philippine housing project.

STYROFOAM
HOUSE
CONCEPT:
This type of house can be put together in just
one week by a team of three people, using
modular pieces, and the price is between
$68,700 and $78,500 for a house with a floor
space of about 36 sqm and a ceiling height of 3
meters. Since Styrofoam does not rot or rust
and is not at risk of termite infestation, these
dome houses are considered very durable.

STYROFOAM
HOUSE
The advantage of Styrofoam dome houses is
that they are highly customizable, allowing
owners to put their unique touches on them.
They can be used as permanent residences,
guesthouses, or even small hotels. Because they
are easy and cheap to build, they can also be
used as temporary housing in case of disasters.

STYROFOAM
HOUSE
FEATURES:
Fast Construction - with the help of the
development of modern technologies and
innovations.
Highly Resistant Materials - used materials
are highly resistant to earthquakes, fires, and
typhoons.

Because of its geographical location, the Philippines is vulnerable to tropical cyclones, which yield heavy rains and
flooding over vast areas, in addition to gusty winds, resulting in significant casualties and plant and property
destruction. It is good to know that some have emerged ideas to generate a typhoon-resistant house that is
perfectly convenient for people who struggle when a typhoon nearly approaches their area. This can also be
integrated into disaster preparedness. Being able to prepare can assist in alleviating the fear and losses that
happen during the catastrophic events. Societies, families, and individuals should be aware of what to do in the
event of a severe storm. Nevertheless, through these ideas, more concepts for typhoon-resistant housing can be
further studied and developed.

Since the previous typhoons have reached a high-level signal unlike before, these proposed projects or approaches
are the steppingstone to preparing or providing an approach for any disasters that might happen. As future
architects, we must provide a design approach that could lessen the typhoon's damage to any households and
especially those who are located in typhoon-prone areas. As the Cuboid House design shows a weird design but it's
expressively amazing that it is effective during storm surges especially if the typhoon also brings not just a strong
rainfall but also strong distractive wind.

The Philippines experienced 20 storms on average per year. Therefore, typhoon-resistant housing projects are
necessary to safeguard people and valuables from damage caused by typhoons. Appropriate planning, building, and
management ensure that emergency preparedness and evacuation are supported by effectively preparing people,
families, and communities for the impacts of typhoons. Moreover, the invention of the Cuboid House is beneficial
for people, especially those situated near rivers. The Cuboid House is meant to have unusually shaped houses. Its
curved walls, in contrast to the typical shape of roofing, will significantly improve living standards by reducing
structural damage from severe winds. This invention will help lessen the casualties during such unpredictable
situations. Perhaps, it is time to introduce new construction materials to Filipinos that provide quality and resilience.

Modernization has introduced a growing number of new technologies into people's daily lives, leading to the
development of advanced building technology in the building and construction industry. This led to the
development of disaster-resistant building constructions, especially residential structures, as homes are designed
to protect people from the effects of the environment. Building houses that could withstand earthquakes, fires, and
typhoons allowed people to adapt - Styrofoam houses are built to withstand earthquakes, but they are also
resistant to typhoons and fires. They are quick and simple to build and offer insulation during the cold season. It is
difficult to lose a house in a disaster where your sole safe place is destroyed, thus using these strategies will help
minimize the loss of structures and properties as well as avoid casualties.

The application of flood-resistant design should be considered in the housing type here in the Philippines. The
advantages of these kinds of projects may help to minimize flood risk and property damage on one's property.
Although it has yet to be tried to use this kind of setup in the Philippines, international studies and construction
have proved that this is highly recommended for the high-prone flood areas. One of the reasons why it is
necessary, besides its low-cost budget and minimizing the risk to people, is to ensure that it is resistant to rot and
termites. It can also be vulnerable to earthquakes and offers great thermal insulation capabilities, which leads to
increased energy efficiency and cheaper heating and cooling expenses. As it happens, the styrofoam housing type
is one of the best options for flood-resistant projects.
