DIVERSITY STATEMENT
My academic journey has gone through numerous challenges belonging to a lower-middle-class
family in India. My father who works in an Electric Distribution Company as a lower-ranked
employee used to teach me how Electric Engineering began. Since my school days, my father has
been my guardian, teacher, and motivator for overcoming my challenges in life. Despite his
hectic work schedule, I have always had his guidance for my academic career. My education was
from a Christian Missionary school in Kolkata where I received external scholarships. I got to
mix with people from different cultures from my school days. I have always been with people
who belong to different religions, cultures, creeds, and colors. My parents have taught me the
moral principle that every person is equal despite his religion, caste, color, creed, or sex.
I used to work additional hours as a teacher to teach students from low-income families. My
parents have watched my commitment to work since I was in elementary school. The desire to
understand "why and how" in the realm of science and technology drove me to pursue study and
higher education. External grants and scholarships financed my study throughout my
undergraduate studies. The projects I investigated aided me in honing my analytical skills. The
ability to think beyond the box provided me with more confidence in my studies. Currently, my
master’s program is funded by a government scholarship which covers my tuition and living
expenses. The rigorous project in my Masters has taught me perseverance and commitment
towards research. I have completed a variety of mini projects based on my specialization which
has improved and shaped my way of approaching research problems. During my academic
journey as an undergraduate and graduate, I have had the opportunity to interact with people
from different communities who have completed their education with me. Currently, in my
master’s degree, I have interacted with people from other countries who are pursuing their
graduate degrees at my institution. To me, I feel proud to be diverse and be among people from
different countries. It is a great learning opportunity for all of us if we get a chance to mix with
people from diverse communities. I am fortunate enough to be born in India, where every state
has a diverse culture where people in each state speak different languages and follow their own
culture. Despite such diversity, we all are Indians and feel proud due to our secular culture where
everyone is treated equally.
I have engaged in a variety of extracurricular activities since my school days. I was able to
collect medals from district sports events. I appreciate being a philanthropist and assisting people
who cannot afford higher education. My fellow friends and I established an NGO where we raise
funding to help academically brilliant children. I like participating in such social clubs and
committees. I am now assisting cancer patients, and after graduating from college, I hope to
establish an NGO to assist these people irrespective of caste, color, creed, etc. I have always
enjoyed people from different racial, cultural, and religious origins. Humanity, in my opinion, is
the underlying philosophy of life, and we must never lose sight of this. My goals are to advance
my field and benefit society by finding solutions to pressing issues. I would be glad to join any
communities that are part of the University of Colorado Boulder that are working towards the
betterment of less fortunate people in society. Having overcome many obstacles in my academic
career, I would like to assist those who are less fortunate and cannot afford to further their
education. I am striving to be a person of good moral character, and once I complete my degree, I
hope to be able to assist other students who are pursuing their educations to achieve their
ambitions.
