5 Safety

5.1 Safety Warnings

5.1.1 Electrical
Do NOT remove any covers from the scanner while the power is on or allow an end user
to operate the scanner with ANY covers removed. Engineers must exercise extreme
caution while working on any scanner.

It is advisable to allow the scanner 5 minutes to discharge before removing covers and
any of the boards. The boards may hold a charge and may give a shock if touched.

Please observe anti-static precaution when handling any

electrical boards from the scanner.

5.1.2 Mechanical
The mechanism that operates the lid and the paper handling assembly can trap fingers
when closing. Please handle with care.

5.1.3 Weight
Because the weight of the scanner is approximately 27Kg, 2 people are required to lift the
scanner.

5.1.4 Rotating Rollers

The scanner operates a roller to move the image across the scanner. These rollers may
grip ties and any other similar articles of clothing, as well as long hair if put near the
rollers during operation.

5.2 EMC Testing

The SmartLF model conforms to EMC and FCC (Part B). EMC testing is carried out to
ensure the M Series does not emit signals that can interfere with other devices, and that
no external interference signals will interfere with it.

8 Warranty

Each Colortrac Scanner starts its warranty period when first shipped from Colortrac to the
purchasing Distributor. Non-consumable parts that fail within the warranty period without
inappropriate influence or action will be replaced free of charge.

Distributors are required to identify faulty parts. To help identify faults quickly it is
recommended that Distributors hold spare parts. Parts that are replaced under warranty
must be returned to Colortrac using the address at the front of this manual.

When a Distributor requests a warranty replacement, Colortrac Technical Support will

issue them an RMA reference number. The warranty replacement is dispatched once
Colortrac receives the defective part. In exceptional cases, Colortrac may agree to send
a warranty replacement before the defective part has been received.

8.1 Warranty Period

The Colortrac warranty period is 2-years. The warranty period starts on the date the
product is handed to the carrier for delivery. The start of the warranty period may be
delayed by 3-months to coincide with its installation at a customer’s site. To request a
deferment to the start of the warranty period follow the procedure on ‘How to extend
warranty’ at Chapter 15.1.

8.2 Consumables

Parts that wear according to operator usage are deemed consumables and not replaced
under warranty. Consumables can be purchased from Colortrac. Those M Series parts

10 CIS Technology

A Contact Image Sensor (CIS) is an integrated module that comprises an illumination system, an
optical system and a light-sensing system - all within a single compact component.

The light-sensing system is the silicon surface which is

divided up into (e.g. 5000) discrete square cells, the
size of each being a fraction of an inch depending upon
the required scanning resolution (a 600 dpi scanner will
use a CIS whose cells are 1/600" across). The optical
system is a rod lens array that directs light from the
document surface onto the silicon surface. Such an
optical system is 1:1; i.e. there is no reduction or
enlargement; and this results in a scanner offering the
best performance in terms of resolving power and
geometric accuracy.
Cross-section of a CIS scanner sensor.

The illumination is provided by Light Emitting Diodes

(LED’s) shining down a light guide, which in turn
directs the light onto the document. There are three
LED’s (Red, Green, and Blue) which strobe rapidly,
thereby providing the colour content in the scan. Note
that there are no colour filters in the optical or light-
sensing system. The colour gamut of a CIS scanner
is therefore determined by the spectrum of each of M Series SingleSensor CIS Assy
the LED’s, rather than by colour filters as is the case
with CCDs. Because colour filter technology is more developed than LED spectrum technology, a
CIS scanner will not provide as wide a colour gamut as a CCD scanner.

However, rapidly strobed LED’s require no warm-up period. Therefore, a CIS scanner can be
switched on and used immediately. Furthermore, LED’s are very stable which means that a CIS
scanner does not require frequent re-calibration.

11 Scanner Accessories

11.1 USB Cable Type A and B

Length: 3 meter max.

Speed: 5Gbps

This high quality USB cable complies fully with

the USB 3.0 specification.

 Transfer Speed ~ a new transfer type

called ‘Super Speed’ or SS – 5Gbps
 More Bandwidth ~ uses 2
unidirectional data paths; one to
receive, one to transmit
 Power Management ~ U0 through U3
link power management states are
defined.
 Support to rotating media ~ Bulk
protocol is undated with a new feature
called Stream Protocol that allows a
large number of logical stream within
an Endpoint.

USB 3.0 has transmission speeds of up to 5 Gbps, which is 10 times faster than USB 2.0 (480
Mbps). USB 3.0 significantly reduces the time required for data transmission, reduces power
consumption, and is backwards compatible with USB 2.0.

USB 3.0 support can be added to existing laptop computers with only USB 2.0 and Expresscard
support by using an Expresscard-to-USB 3.0 adapter to supply USB 3.0 signal support. Although
the PCI Express port that the Express card connects cannot supply power of itself, the Express
card and hence the USB 3 ports nevertheless derive power from the USB 2 port that it
additionally connects to as part of the interface. If the
express card has more than one USB 3 port then only
100mA is available from each port. Additional power for
multiple ports may be derived in the following ways:

There have been some issues of USB 3.0 equipment only

transferring data at USB 2.0 speed, usually with a message
"This USB Mass Storage Device can transfer information
faster if you connect it to a Super-Speed USB 3.0 port".
This has been due to several causes, including drivers,
certain cables specified as USB 3.0 (problems disappeared
when a different cable was used), order of starting
equipment, equipment needing to be disconnected and
reconnected, and over clocked computers

NOTE:

Colortrac provides a USB 3.0 cable with each M Series. The use of a cable longer than 3m is at
the customer’s discretion. Colortrac is not responsible for errors that may occur as a result.

2. Make fine adjustments to

the stitch values of each
section of the SingleSensor
CIS Assy by over writing
the appropriate value and
clicking ‘Set Stitch’

If the image, scanned at 600dpi, needs an adjustment of (for example)1 pixel, change the value at the
CIS area (e.g. CIS1) by 1 count in the same direction that moving the line will solve the problem. The
same is true for both the FB and LR stitch values. If an adjustment is made to any of the inner values,
then all values before that point need to be change by exactly the same amount in the same direction.
Values cannot be negative numbers.

Example: CIS 3 has a step of 2 pixels higher than CIS 4, adjust CIS’s 1, 2 and 3 by -2 counts or CIS 4
and 5 by +2 counts.

It is important to always click ‘Set Stitch’ after making any adjustments, as these new figures are not
sent to the scanner unless it is set.
