Project LAMRAG: Arduino-Based Energy Consumption Meter

B. INTRODUCTION

1. Features and Specifications

Project LAMRAG is a smart energy consumption monitoring device with an Arduino

base. It keeps track of real-time energy usage and historical data and intends to help
residents and small entrepreneurs manage their energy consumption. This prototype
continuously measures and displays data about current energy use on the LCD. It has a user
interface that consists of a display screen that shows the display of voltage, current, power
consumption, and the billed amount. Users can reset their bill records after payment to
ensure that all energy consumed is recorded. It connects to an Internet of Things (IoT)
application that reads energy consumption data and the appliance control remotely. Device
features include an app that will detect short circuits and alert the user. Another is an
automatic cut of the devices and emits an alarm when it senses an overloaded circuit. The
appliance management system will enable the users to detect their unnecessary appliances
and switch them off to reduce energy usage. This invention provides the capacity for real-
time observation in energy usage and through such a possibility, users can be made aware
when peak consumption will be experienced and vary their usages. It not only ensures
efficiency in the conservation of energy but also minimizes carbon footprints attributed to
household energy consumption. Project LAMRAG is a very significant step in the
advancement of superior technologies in energy management equipped with tools used to
monitor, control, and manage energy consumption appropriately with safety assured
against electrical faults.

2. Market Trends and Opportunities

This desire to track the usage of energy in homes and personal experiences of the
problems faced within their community originate the motive for such innovation.
Consumers' inability to manage electric consumption is the central problem and driving
force that enables us to generate an invention that will solve the mentioned problem. With
the real-time monitoring of consumers' consumption, because of this, inventions such as
IoT-based systems would generate a high level of energy usage awareness in the consumer.
For instance, having the Internet of Things platform connected with Arduino technology,
data gathering has been made simple. This invention solves the problems of energy
ineffectiveness and uninformed consumers in their consumption of electrical energy. To
avoid duplication, old literature and products of the reviewed systems were carried out to
determine whether this new product existed in the market or not. Numerous IoT-based
systems in energy monitoring have been analyzed such as Arduino and GSM-based systems.
From the study, there are good features that make this new invention unique: real-time
access of data is better; it improves the interaction between users through mobile
applications, as compared to other previous systems.

There are numerous products already being presented to the market, these are IoT-
based smart energy meter with GSM technology
(https://media.neliti.com/media/publications/428432-iot-and-gsm-based-smart-energy-
meter-28f0dea5.pdf), Arduino-Based Automatic Monitoring Utility Power Supply to
Households (https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/7016233), Energy and smart billing
system with Smart meters (https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/9225363), Wi-Fi
controlled monitored device with control over consumption of power
(https://lpulaguna.edu.ph/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/5-MONITORING-AND-CONTROL-
OF-ELECTRICITY-CONSUMPTION-USING-RASPBERRY-Pi-THROUGH-IoT.pdf), and Intelligent
Circuit Breakers for Real-Time Current Measurement and Monitoring
(https://www.researchgate.net/publication/324507273_DESIGN_AND_IMPLEMENTATION-
OF-INTELLIGENT-CIRCUIT-BREAKER-FOR-ELECTRICAL-CURRENT-SENSING-AND-
MONITORING). One major difference of our invention is that it provides more convenient
user interface, real-time alerts for heavy usage, and has easy integration capabilities with
other smart home appliances. Also, it has various improved data accuracy and predictive
analytics that will help its users to plan better for their energy needs. Based on these unique
qualities, the innovation does not just fill the gap in the market but also creates a positive
engagement with consumers.

c. MATERIALS AND METHODS

For the prototype for innovation, the following materials have to be available:

1. Arduino Uno

- this board is a microcontroller with its chip from ATmega328P. it's running at 16 MHz and
incorporates 32 KB of flash memory.

2. NodeMCU ESP8266

- this is the microcontroller that gives Wi-Fi IoT functionality with the power to send or
receive data by remote control.

3. 16 × 2 LCD Display

- real energy use statistics are continuously measured and posted. displays billed amount

4. Multimeter
- measures the current-voltage, as well as the accurate electrical parameters.

5. CT- Current Transformer

- measuring the current flowing in the electric network.

6. 12V Battery

- the power source to the equipment.

7. Connecting Wires and Breadboard

- in order to make connections between components.

8. Arduino IDE Software

- used for programming the microcontroller.

9. Signal Warning Light

- to inform the users of any electric fault.

To ensure that one can reproduce the invention, then there are these clear steps:

1. Connect your computer to the Arduino Uno using a USB Type-B. Install the Arduino IDE
software and then open it.

2. Connect the NodeMCU ESP8266 to the Arduino Uno: TX to RX and RX to TX. Now connect
the 4 way relay module to the correct digital pins on the Arduino. Connect the multimeter
set on current/voltage to Arduino; very excellent placement of connections on the power
supply. The CT should be connected to a circuit when energy consumption needs to be
monitored.

3. System should be powered by a 12V power supply from a 12V battery that feeds all, from
the Arduino module, to the modules connected.

4. Outsourcing the code and uploading the Arduino program that measures energy
consumption using pulses from the energy meter. NodeMCU will be programmed to provide
the Wi-Fi connection for the data transmission.

5. Use an open IoT platform such as ThingSpeak to store data for later analysis. It should
show real-time energy usage. And the application should show that.

6. Install Signal warning light and connect this light to the relay module for alerts in case of
electrical faults.
7. Switch on the system and verify if everything is in good working order. Look for real-time
data and the alarm system in the LCD display.

Usage Instructions

To be effective in the novelty, do this:

1. Open your IoT application on mobile or computer.

2. The LCD and application provide real-time information in respect of consumption of

energy. Scour history data to check use patterns over time.

3. Set notifications. It can also set up alerts to specific patterns of energy use.

4. Through the application, switch ON and OFF the devices using the relay module.

5. If there is a signal warning light, inspect for possible electrical faults. This in-depth
account opens the entire instructions on how to reproduce the invention from materials to
assembly and usage instructions that will allow anybody to take the approach toward
making their very own version of the energy monitoring device.

D. Scientific Bases

A prerequisite of IoT technology today was considered as a base for the present
research work focused on the monitoring and control of electrical energy consumption by
Internet-connected devices. Energy systems based on IoT had proved that previous studies
by Ahmed et al. in 2023 effectively monitored energy in real-time, while blockchain
technology gained importance to be associated with data security and transparency of
energy-related transactions. Ali Hussien et al. (2021) in particular conducted research on the
utilization of IoT in monitoring energy consumption; therefore, providing a foundation for
the use of smart meters in residential areas.

This paper extends earlier research where the development of an Arduino-based

energy monitoring system that transmits data to an open IoT platform called ThingSpeak is
explored. The principles of data collection and analysis will set the pace to know how energy
usage patterns can be effectively monitored and managed through IoT devices. The research
basis of this article will focus on the functionality of smart energy meters-adding new
knowledge about energy efficiency and consumer awareness in the context of sustainable
energy practices.
