1. Mention the basic principles of elastic (or) working stress theory of reinforced concrete
flexural members?
2. How do you compute the ultimate flexural strength of a doubly reinforced section using
the IS code recommendations?
3. What are shear failures? Under what conditions you would expect this type of failures
in reinforced concrete structures?
4. Explain the terms: under – reinforced, balanced and over reinforced sections as applied
to reinforced concrete sections?
5. What is the necessity of evaluating the ultimate flexural strength of reinforced concrete
sections?
6. Explain briefly the various types shear failures modes encountered in reinforced
concrete structures subjected to loads.
Imp Questions for 14 Marks
UNIT I

1. An RC beam 300 mm wide and 700 mm deep overall, is reinforced with 20 mm ɸ 3

bars. The centres of the bars are 50 mm from the underside of the beam. The maximum
stress are not to exceed 7 N/mm2 for concrete and 190 N/mm2 for steel (m=13.33). Find
the moment of resistance and the safely distributed load, the beam can carry. The span
is 6 m and the weight of concrete is 25 Kn/m3?
2. An RC beam, 250 × 500 mm overall in section, is reinforced with four 22 mm ɸ bars at
the bottom, with a cover of 25 mm from the centre of reinforcement. The effective span
is 5 m. Find the concentrated load the beam can support at the centre. Take σcbc = 5
N/mm2, σst = 190 N/mm2, m = 18.66?

UNIT II

1. Calculate the moment of resistance of a R.C. beam of rectangular section 250 mm wide
and 500 mm deep, if it is reinforced with 6 number of 20 mm bars on tension side and
2 number of 20 mm bars on compression side. Assume steel of grade Fe 250 and
concrete of grade M 20. Effective cover provided is 40 mm on both sides?
2. A T-beam slab floor has 125 mm thick slab forming part of T-beams which are of 8 m
clear span. The end bearing are 450 mm thick. Spacing of T-beams is 3.5 m. The live
load on the floor is 3 Kn/m2. Design one of the intermediate beams. Use M20 concrete
and Fe 415 steel?
3. An Isolated T-beam has flange of 2400 mm wide and 120 mm deep. The effective width
and depth of web are 300 mm and 580 mm respectively. The tension reinforcement
consists of eight bars of 20 mm diameter. The effective span of the simply supported
T-beam is 3.6 m. Determine the moment of resistance of the beam. The grade of
concrete and steel are M 20 and Fe 415 respectively.
4. A reinforced concrete beam is required to resist an ultimate moment of 300 Kn-m. The
width of beam is restricted to 300 mm. Effective cover is 40 mm. Adopting M 20 grade
concrete and Fe 415 steel. Determine the overall depth of beam?
5. A R.C. beam has cross-section 300 mm × 600 mm and is subjected to the following
design forces.
a. Bending moment = 115 kN-m
b. Shear force = 95 kN-m
c. Torsional Moment = 45 kN-m

Determine the reinforcement for which the section is to be designed?

UNIT IV

1. A column of size 300 mm x 400 mm has effective length of 3.6 m and is subjected to
Pu = 1100 kN and Mu = 150 kN-m about major axis. Design the column using M 25
concrete and Fe 415 steel, providing the steel
a. On two sides
b. On four sides.
Assume cover of 60 mm.
2. A corner column 400 mm x 400 mm, is subjected to the factored loads Pu = 1300 kN,
Mux = 190 kN-m and Muy = 110 kN-m. Design the reinforcement in he column,
assuming M 25 concrete and Fe 415 steel and effective cover of 60 mm. Assuming it is
a short column?
