INTRODUCTION

crust
Earth may look like a solid spherical rock but it is
made up of four distinct layers. mantle

outer core
crust
mantle inner core
outer core
inner core

The variation in temperature and pressure

across these layers influences their
characteristics.
THE CRUST

crust
The crust is the solid outermost layer,

making up Earth's continents and ocean

floors. It is split up into sections, which

we call plates.

Temperature and pressure are lowest

here compared to deeper layers.

THE MANTLE

mantle
The mantle is the thickest layer, made of
very hot, flowing molten rock.

The hot mantle rock rises, flows, and

sinks slowly in circles called convection
currents.

This movement slowly moves the plates

of crust above it. This plate movement
causes earthquakes, volcanoes and
mountains.
THE OUTER CORE

Deeper down is a layer of molten/melting iron

outer core and nickel.

Immense pressure prevents it from solidifying

despite high temperatures.

Its movement generates Earth's magnetic

field.
THE INNER CORE

The inner core is solid, composed mainly of

iron and nickel.
inner core
Despite even higher temperatures than the
outer core, the extreme pressure keeps it in a
solid state.
EARTHQUAKES

Earthquakes are caused by a sudden release

of energy between tectonic plates that makes
the ground shake violently.

Most earthquakes occur in the crust and

uppermost mantle, which is the rigid,
outermost part of the Earth.
VOLCANOES

Volcanoes are openings in the Earth's crust

that allow magma, hot gases and ash to erupt
at the surface. Volcanic eruptions are caused
by the movement of tectonic plates.

Most volcanoes occur along plate boundaries

in the crust and upper mantle. The magma
that erupts comes from deeper in the mantle.
GLOSSARY

Core: The innermost layer of the Earth, consisting of a solid inner core and a liquid outer core made of iron and
nickel.
Crust: The outermost solid layer of the Earth, divided into plates that float on the mantle.
Earthquakes: Vibrations caused by the movement of Earth's plates, often leading to significant ground shaking.
Mantle: The thick middle layer of the Earth, composed of hot, flowing molten rock that moves due to convection
currents.
Plates: Large sections of the Earth's crust that move over the mantle, causing earthquakes, volcanoes, and mountain
formation.
Volcanoes: Openings in Earth's crust that allow magma, gases, and ash to escape from below the surface.
