CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Apple snail(Pomacea canaliculata) was reported could cause

severe damage to food crop especially in rice crops here in the

Philippines, which is a staple food for the Filipinos. The farmers mostly

rely on chemical to overcome this problem which improper use of

pesticides could give a negative impact on the environment. In the last

decade, apple snails have received attention because of their ability to

damage wetland crops through foraging. Channeled and island apple

snails are opportunistic feeders that consume a variety of aquatic

vegetation, fruits and vegetables, algae, remains of decaying

organisms and other snail eggs. The researcher will investigate the

effectivity of the snails to be use as a fertilizer as they are fermented.

Golden apple snails eat young and emerging rice plants. They

cut the rice stem at the base, destroying the whole plant. To

distinguish golden apple snails from native snails, check its color and

size. Golden apple snails have muddy brown shell and golden pinkish

or orange-yellow flesh. They are bigger and lighter in color compared

to native snails. Its eggs are bright pink in color.diseases.

In addition, golden apple snails can also be used as a protein

source feed because they have a crude protein (CP) content of more

than 20%. The nutrient components of golden apple snail meal is CP

46,2%, metabolism energy (ME) 1920 kcal/kg, calcium (Ca) 2,98% and

phosphor (P) 0,35%.

Objectives of the study

This study aims to discover the following;

1. Determine the effectiveness of growing pechay by use of fermented

golden apple snail as fertilizer.

2. Determine the growth performance of pechay using different volume

of fertilizer in terms of the following

*leaves

*width

*height

3. Determine the survival rate of pechay

4. Determine the return of investment

Importance of the study

This research will undertake with the aim to provide result and

information regarding to the chosen topic from the researcher.

This study will benefit to the following;

The Researcher

The researcher will gain significance in this study they would

improve their skill, strategy, and knowledge in research

The Teachers

Teachers can also gain significance in this study, for their ,they

would asses the needs of the students and compare and contrast the

use of different fertilizer in Agricultural field

The Farmers

The farmers will also gain significance of this study, the results

may give them idea how to use golden apple snail as fertilizer rather

than leaving them behind destroying rice fields.

Definition of Terms

Golden Apple Snail –( Pomacea canaliculata), commonly known

as the golden apple snail or the channeled apple snail, is a species of

large freshwater snail with gills and an operculum, an aquatic

gastropod mollusc in the family Ampullariidae, the apple snails.

Pesticide- a substance used for destroying insects or other organisms

harmful to cultivated plants or to animals.

Fertilizer- a chemical or natural substance added to soil or land to

increase its fertility.
