BASIC FACTS
- 2nd largest country by the area in the world
- capital city: Ottawa
- part of the Commonwealth but it doesn’t have a Union Jack on the flag
- other cities: Quebec City, Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Halifax, Victoria, Regina
- currency: canadian dollar
- population: almost 40 milion inhabitants
- official language: English and French
- flag: the maple leaf

GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS


- constitutional monarchy, the ceremonial head of the state is the monarch of the UK –
Charles III., but he holds little power, his representative is Governor General
- has a federal systém of government
- it has a federal parliament located in the capital Ottawa
- the parliament has 2 houses: the Senate (the Upper House) and the House of
Commons (the Lower House)
- the government sits in the House of Commons
- the leader of the government is called prime minister
- each province also has its own parliament which is single-chambered
- the head of the government in each province is the premier

GEOGRAPHY
- bordered by the USA to the south and the north-west (Alaska)
- it borders to the Atlantic Ocean in the east, to the Artic Ocean in the north, to the
Pacific Ocean in the west
- most people live near the US-Canadian border
- the southern part of the country is covered in forest
- the northern part is motly tundra
- the Canadian Rocky Mountains lie along the west coast
- the highest mountain: Mount Logan, Yukon – Saint Elias Mountains
- many rivers: the Mackenzie and St Lawrence
- lakes: Lake Superior, Lake Huron, Great Bear Lake, Great Slave Lake, Winnipeg
- country is divided into 10 provinces: British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan,
Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova
Scotia and Prince Edward Island, and 3 territories: Northwest Territories, Nunavut
and Yukon
- continental climate with cold snowy winters and warm summers
- the north has a polar climate
- has natural environment for many different animal species
- animals commonly found in Canada include the beaver (the Canadian national
animal), the moose, the Canada goose, the black bear, the grizzly bear, the polar bear,
the coyote
HISTORY
- the first Europeans who colonized the Canadian territory were the Portuguese in the
15th century
- they were replaced by the French up to 18th century
- from the 18th century control moved to the British
- in 1867 the country became more independent when it became a dominion of the UK
- in 1982 Canada became formally separated from the UK
