Lesson Title: The Kidney and its Function in the Excretory System

1. Objectives

 To understand how the kidneys filter blood and remove waste products through the
excretory system.

2. Materials

 Clear plastic tubing (to represent blood vessels and urinary tract)
 Red-colored water (to represent blood)
 A small hand pump or squeeze bottle (to act as the heart or blood source)
 Two containers or cups (to represent the kidneys and the bladder)
 Food coloring (optional)
 Tape or clamps
 A large basin or tray (to catch any spills)

3. Problem

 How do the kidneys filter blood and remove waste products in the excretory system, and
what happens when the kidneys do not function effectively?

4. Developing Hypothesis/Prediction

 Hypothesis: If the heart pumps blood through a system that includes the kidneys
(represented by a container), then the "blood" (red-colored water) will be filtered to
separate "waste" (colored water) from the "clean" water, demonstrating how kidneys filter
waste from blood.

5. Testing Hypothesis or Prediction/Conduct of

Investigation/Research/Data Gathering

Procedure:

1. Set up the "Heart" Pump:

o Attach the clear plastic tubing to the nozzle of the hand pump or squeeze bottle
using tape. This represents the heart and major blood vessels supplying blood to the
kidneys.
o Have two tubes coming out of the pump: one leading to the "kidneys" container and
the other returning from the kidneys to the "heart."

2. Prepare the Blood:

o Mix water with red food coloring to simulate blood. Pour it into one of the
containers to serve as the “blood supply.”

3. Create the Filtration Pathways:

o Connect a tube from the hand pump to the container representing the kidneys. This
tube carries the "unfiltered blood" to the kidneys.
o Attach another tube from the kidneys container back to the heart pump to
represent filtered blood returning to the circulatory system.
o Add a separate tube leading from the kidneys container to another container that
represents the bladder, showing the removal of waste (urine).

4. Start the Filtration Process:

o Begin by pumping the hand pump or squeeze bottle. Observe how the red-colored
water (blood) moves through the system.
o Notice how "blood" flows to the kidneys (one container), where it is "filtered" and
the "waste" water flows to the bladder container, while "clean" water returns to the
heart.

6. Analysis and Discussion

 Observe the movement of "blood" through the tubing and note how the "kidneys" filter out
the "waste" (represented by a different color or separated water).
 Discuss how kidneys filter out waste and maintain a balanced composition of blood.
 Consider what might happen if the kidneys are unable to filter blood effectively, such as in
cases of kidney disease or failure.

7. Checking of Hypothesis/Prediction

 Compare the observations with the hypothesis to determine if the experiment demonstrates
how the kidneys filter blood and remove waste.

8. Conclusion

 Summarize findings on how the kidneys function to filter blood and remove waste products,
playing a crucial role in maintaining overall body health.
 Reflect on the importance of effective kidney function and what occurs when this process is
disrupted.
